The people who perpetrate these phony bomb threats/scares should be convicted of a crime--terrorism, because they could be responsible for the death of somebody. A person could drop dead of a heart attack, a stroke, or an asthma attack, or have an epileptic seizure.

And what does any of that have to do with my comment? Perhaps you meant to respond to Letters' flippant remark instead?

Harvard is not very good.

But it's the best there is.

Harvard thinks it is the best there is and has managed to convince too many people of that. But it's not. It's probably better than most in many areas, but there are plenty that are equally good or better in most fields.

You can certainly get a world class education there, but you can do that at UMass, too, if you take full advantage of your opportunities.

But "Harvard" "Yale" "Princeton" "MIT" etc. open doors and get you those second looks. They also put you in a position to rub elbows with those deep pocket folks and their networks who like the brand names.

... I mostly associated with other people on scholarships -- I had very little interaction with the elite. So not much in the way of "door opening" or "elbow rubbing". That was fine, the people I did get to know were intelligent and interesting.
