Lower Roxbury starts at Hammond Street. Unfortunately the city seems to think the actual border is Melnea Cass.
Before I695 and the the housing projects obliterated most of the neighborhood it was a far smoother transition from the South End to Dudley.

There's a lot of history in that name, and if the area is sought out more in real estate, call it what it is, and recognize when Roxbury property values are increasing.

I always thought "Lower Roxbury" was mostly what we now think of as the South End past Washington St. (I refuse to type out that other name for the area, given Washington divides the cross streets between East and West, not North and South). Like I said, I only have a vague impression of this, based mainly on a friend who moved onto East Brookline and had a conniption fit when the cable company accused him of living in Roxbury.
