But pumpkin flavored things are hitting the shelves...

In various dollar stores I frequent, the shelves have been filled with Halloween items for a few weeks now. Its all part of the new, normal "at all times we must be in some sort of holiday season".

This has been going on for decades.

"We didn't make enough money during last years (insert any holiday name here) season, so we'll start pushing the (insert holiday name here) crap even earlier this year" mentality.

Too bad businesses are so locked into the "the only thing that matters is profits, even if it's only a dime extra" mentality drilled into 1980s MBA graduates that they haven't figured out they can actually make MORE money if they shorten the (insert any holiday here) sales season rahter than lengthen it.

I've seen this too.

I ran out of coffee this morning and had to drink some Pumpkin Spice Kcups from last year.. ewwww

It's not even labor day yet.

I don't often take the Commuter Rail but when it do... It sucks. I ran out to the West Medford stop at 7:03am for the 7:09 train only to be greeted with a message that the train had been canceled due to "Mechanical Problems".

Surprisingly unreported on UHub but the MBTA has announced new CR schedules are in the works with the implication they will be cutting trains on all routes in an effort to "improve" service.

If at first you don't succeed, make failure your goal.

I thought that was their motto for at least the past 25 years.

Yes, that's how the privately-run commuter rail system meets its indicators -- lower them. So why not privatize the bus system too? Then all the "on-time" stats will be looking up!!

Republican patronage.

Not the MBTA. Just sayin'.

MBTA is only responsible for their own problems, not the MBCR's.

Commuter rail management been outsourced to a Euro firm called Keolis since last year.

BU freshman orientation has been happening all summer; there's like 10 different sessions. But maybe those groups decided to walk instead. Smart kids.

start arriving Monday.

I think the green shirts are the FYSOP (First- Year Student Outreach Program) kids, not orientation. As CMozz mentioned, orientation has been happening all summer.

And not in the Godfather kind of way.

Spotted the first roof mattress of the season, out of state plates, Mass Ave, in the pouring rain.

How long until the Christmas music?

5 or so years ago I saw a car driving down Ashford St in Allston with a mattress on the roof....held down only by the arms of the four people inside the car. Always wondered how that worked out for them.

A few weeks ago, I was driving down Market Street in Brighton and saw the same thing only it wasn't a mattress but several sheets of drywall. As much as I wanted to snap a picture and shame the driver and his passengers on social media, common sense prevailed and I kept both hands on the wheel and stayed well behind them.

Can confirm I saw this just the other day on Harvard Ave. at Comm Ave.

Last year on September 1, which also happened to be Labor Day, I saw my first Christmas commercial of the season on TV. It was for a car. I was so annoyed I don't even remember what car.

it's a program called FYSOP (First Year Student Outreach Project.)

It's a community service week for freshmen, where students move in early and spend the week doing various themed community service around the city, and, after hours, do mini-field trips and getting-to-know-you social events.

http://www.bu.edu/csc/fysop/

I had some friends do it: some really loved it, some found the Community Service Club a little too saccharine for their tastes (the students who were really into the CSC were creepy-happy all the time.)

Yep, they're back. Yesterday in Harvard Square, I overheard a guy speaking authoritatively as he walked down the street: "The Network was filmed at a neighboring school, not here...". yadah yadah yadah. Other person (student): "so you mean, I won't see anything that looks familiar, then?".
And besides that, youf walking helter-skelter, slamming into me without so much as an acknowledgement of my existence never mind a pardon-me. The freshmen hath arrived, for sure.

I have the best birds eye view of Hampshire St in Inman Square. The past few days have been a handful as few of these idiots seem to understand what bike lanes are.

Clever little assholes assume it's a "cool short cut" to evade driving in the normal lane when pwecious wittle snookums is in a hurry.

It'll probably take em till spring to figure it out.
