Purloined South End library box back home; guy who took it apologizes

Lydia Walshin reports her tiny free library - taken the other night - is back home on Milford Street tonight:

Our Little Free Library came home tonight, courtesy of a neighbor who saw the news coverage, recognized the library on the street, called the police, and identified the person who took it. The police brought it to us, and the man who took the library came over on his bicycle to apologize. The library needs a bit of TLC and we'll have it back up in a day or two.

She adds:

He said someone told him it was free and he could take it. Perhaps he misunderstood that only the books were free. The man came over after the police left, rang our doorbell, and apologized to us. I think he was sincerely sorry and had no idea what he had done.

That's so sweet. I mean really--it actually takes some guts to go apologize for something he must feel really dumb about. So bravo to the penitent library thief--glad it's home. And glad to see something on here tonight besides multiple shootings.:(

Glad to know it wasn't a resident of the villa Victoria which someone suggested in the original post, let's stop the stereotypes.

Had it been up to that poster, VV would've been razed by now!

It actually was someone in Villa Victoria -- the library was spotted on their rear porch; sounds like they may have confused 'free library' with 'free! library'

the guy who stole it just proved how unbelievably stupid the average citizen is. "HEY A FREE LIBRARY! I"LL RIP IT OUT AND TAKE THE WHOLE THING"....even damaging it in the process.....MORON.

And people like this are allowed to vote, all you need to do is be 18. This is why people like Donald Trump can run for president and be taken seriously. NO faith in humanity. Idiocracy reigns...

Yes, really. The person you are responding to had their faith in humanity restored. You, on the other hand, may simply not have the capacity for such.

(note that if your view of humanity is as bleak as you say, you'll take that as a compliment)

Stupid or not, the guy had the humility to return the box and apologize for said stupidity. There are always going to be stupid people, but it's nice to see at least one of them conjured 2 brain cells to rub together (which were seemingly missing during his covert heist), realized what he did was wrong, and at least attempted to make amends. Wouldn't the world be a better place if all criminals were so easily corrected?

the guy returned it and apologized. He said someone told him it was a freebee and he believed that person, apparently.

So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

He might have been developmentally disabled or otherwise intellectually challenged if he had no idea what he had done.

stuff is left on the street with a "FREE" sign on it.

Bicycles can be used to, um, transport "goods".

Well, that explains the answer to my comment on the story when it disappeared. If the taker is to be believed...and I guess I have no reason not to, then the way something like this disappears whole hog is because someone took the "free" idea wrong and thought it meant the whole library.

Like I was saying all along, it wasn't likely malicious just because malicious cretins would have just destroyed it in place for lack of effort.
