Another bit of old Chinatown going away

Adam Cheung reports Sun Sun Supermarket on Oxford Street is closing.

Sun Sun was one of the first Chinese Supermarkets in Boston's Chinatown if not the first. And it is one of the last old school style mom and pop supermarkets to last.

Like the author, it has been years since I was a patron at Sun Sun, but it was a great small grocer back when I lived on Kingston. Really nice staff, who were very patient with my questions. Another little bit of Chinatown history fading out.

But.. the folks who were in Chinatown are resourceful. They are setting up in Quincy and in Malden. So yeah they aren't in "Chinatown" anymore, but are making communities elsewhere "Chinatown"

Though I do miss the eroding Boston Chinatown-- and would give my right arm for Xinh Xinh to reopen!

Sigh. Anyone familar with Chinatown know this place. It is sad to see it go. Please don't tell me it's going to be replaced with luxury or high market rate residences. I haven't heard anything.

Does anybody know what year it opened?

The building was also used as a Funeral Parlor in the 70s and 80's and was thought to be haunted. People were really surprised that Sun Sun would open up shop there."

So I'm guessing the 80's, unless the "also" mean "concurrently", which would be a...unique arrangement.

It juxtaposes life-size cut outs of residents from Chinatown's past, against Chinatown's present. It's sad thinking about all that history and culture being erased.

Most of the pieces are on the Greenway.

I know this place. My Taiwanese wife likes this store. They seem to have more specific type of goodies she likes than the larger store in Chinatown (Ji Ho). I can attest to how nice the staff are as well. Always happy to see us and very sweet to both of my kids when we stop in.
