Council approves ban on sale of pets raised in factories and by the side of the road

The City Council today unanimously approved an ordinance that will prohibit pet stores from selling puppies, kittens and rabbits from from so-called puppy mills - and which will bar the sale of pets from the back of trucks in parking lots and the side of the road.

If approved by the mayor, this will make Boston the first community in Massachusetts to ban such sales.

City Councilor Matt O'Malley's proposal also includes a provision that will let the Pet Store on Harvard Avenue in Allston to continue selling the rabbits he breeds until 2017. The Pet Store is currently the only store in Boston that sells furry pets.

That measure appeased Councilor Mark Ciommo (Allston/Brighton), who had threatened to vote against if something weren't done to protect the store.

The bill lets pet stores sell pets from animal rescue agencies and does not apply to other animals, such as fish, lizards and chinchillas.

The measure would let police and ISD inspectors issue fines of up to $300. People who have animals seized would be able to appeal the seizures.

If The Pet Store is the only store in Boston that currently sells the pets covered, then what's the point of the pet store part of this ban?

And this will let the city keep them from selling puppy-mill pets.

At the hearing on the measure on Monday, somebody from one of the animal-care groups mentioned that Debby's Petland operated in West Roxbury (on VFW Parkway just before Dedham, I think) until a few years ago - and that it was selling so many pets it had its own warehouse to house the pets it was getting in until it had room in the store for them.

No, why is this guy allowed to stay in business selling rabbits? Is he a friend to someone?

Like I said, he'd be the first I'd inspect and I'd encourage anyone from not buying a rabbit from him.

Or, go in and ask for his inspections, vaccinations, etc...

Because he whined enough to his district councilor Mark Ciommo, who has the spine of a wet noodle. He would vote against sunlight if his own shadow told him to.

I hope this will help all those puppies (especially pit bulls) borne from mothers who are continously getting pregnant and are kept in someone's basement just for some loser to make money by selling them via word of mouth or some form of social media!

Thank you, councilors and Mayor Walsh. Also encouraged to hear that the ISD commissioner said at the hearing that this is the first step in animal protection in Boston, not the last.
