Hyde Park loses its only coffeehouse

Bean & Cream, 680 Truman Parkway, which opened six years ago, closes its doors for the last time today.

The family that owns the shop, along with Cappy's Pizzeria and, in fact, the block of stores both are in, is advertising the space as available for use as a cafe. Cappy's, long a Fairmount Hill institution, will remain open.

Despina alone was worth the trip (not even counting the superb pastries she made at home and brought in). It also hosted open mics for poets and folk singers. And where will realty goddess Pat Tierney have her informal office hours every morning?

We'll miss B&C.

Late add: I just walked down for a final bean. Alas, she didn't bring her famous biscotti today — she makes unquestionably the world's best. Despina is not too sad, figures she'll visit and has other things to do with her time. It was a good run and she was fab at the café biz.

..and the fact that she drove in from Brockton everyday. Poor Pat!

as the place I got a large Italian sub on September 11,2001, after getting home early from work. It was weather wise the perfect early fall-like day, and the sub was excellent. I ate it watching CNN and looking at the interwebz on my WebTV box.

One (this one at least) wonders about the dearth of coffee-specific joints in HP, particularly Cleary and almost adjacent Logan Squares. I call the area Keratin Quarter because the default store fronts are a few particularistic churches and far too many hair salons/barber shops and nail parlors.

While numerous restaurants and dive bars sell coffee, it's not at all a thing on its own or as destinations. T.C.'s was in the building with Townsend's restaurant. The restaurateur's uxorial unit, Rosaline, ran the coffee/pastry side (and made desserts for hubby Michael's place. She's a superb baker and stocked the café. Alas, they split and sold the joints. In compensation, we got the Fairmount Grille. It's a very good restaurant, but jolly owner Chris Rassias shows no interest in a coffee shop or bakery.

Bean & Cream filled the bill for six years, even though down at and across Truman Parkway, it was not as well traveled. The Papadopoulos family owns the small block from Cappy's south. Mom, Despina, did a fine job and even ID'ed and stocked superb ice cream.

So why when the whole rest of Boston has cheek to jowl Starbucks, Nero and such, is this area relegated to a single Dunkies well off the squares and uninviting for spending any seated time? Is the demand absent or do the hipster chains just eschew the southernmost end of the city?

Back in the early 2000s, where River Grille is, Mocha Java (from dedham) had a coffee shop, and it lasted less than 2 years. Also, TC's sadly is now a salon, so there' s no place for a coffeeshop/bakery there now. Anybody who has tried anything cool doesn't seem to have success. A boutique wine/cheese store called Albert Weinstein was across the street from Townsends, and did not last very long. Sorry about Bean and Cream. I'm glad Cappy's is staying put.

I had forgotten about Mocha Java; I was still living in JP then and just visited HP on occasion. I do remember Winestein. The latter was very promising at the beginning. The owner, Sean Martin, was personable and had great tastings -- when and if he was open. He had spotty hours and often didn't keep to these even.

He said he ran a wine shop in the South End. The HP version sounded like much more of a hobby. His heart decidedly wasn't in it.

It seems to be open now. You know, the one that replaced the Colombian place that replaced Salamander Cafe.

The space and staff are not welcoming to lingering with your writing book or laptop. That is even more so for the tiny, raggedy Dunkies on HP Ave.

The place was not priced for the neighborhood. Almost 3.50 for an iced coffee?!
