Mexican sushi proves a tough sell in East Boston, so restaurant focused on it is rebranding with a broader Mexican menu

The Boston Licensing Board today approved plans by the owner of Mexicali Sushi Bar, 199 Sumner St. in Maverick Square, to rename the place La Piñata.

At a hearing yesterday, the restaurant, which has a beer and wine license, said it has struggled with the new name, because Americans are just not used to the idea of Mexican sushi. In addition to the name change, the menu will be expanded to offer Mexican dishes Americans might be more used to - and ready to eat.

I randomly went into this place when my Mexican folks were visiting us here in Boston from California. My mom thought the name was so funny and convinced us all to go in. The staff was super nice and the margs they made us were tasty but I guess they were wine? Had no idea at the time. The sushi was also really fun. I'll always remember that silly night but I'll miss this place.
