Brazen shooting, grief, shock at Forest Hills

A shooting across from the Forest Hills T station around 3 p.m. today left one man injured and people pouring out of the station and nearby shops wondering what had happened. Channel 4 reports the man was shot several times and is in serious condition. Channel 5 reports the man's brother, also in the pick-up, was uninjured.

Above: A detective walks by the pickup truck whose driver was apparently shot and the light pole on Hyde Park Avenue he took down after he put the truck in reverse in an attempt to escape the shooters (who apparently abandoned their car and ran off).

Below: Passersby try to help a grief-stricken woman:

The crowds watch, warily (traffic, as you might expect, was a mess around the station):

Update: 15-year-old held on $750,000 bail for yesterday's Forest Hills shooting.

Daytime shooting in Somerville, too

By Ron Newman | Thu, 09/27/2007 - 4:25pm

Yesterday there was a shooting in broad daylight in East Somerville. The story is covered on both the Somerville Journal and Somerville News websites. The two arrested suspects are from Randolph and Fitchburg. Why did they come to my city to cause trouble?

This happened at a location that I regularly pass when commuting by bicycle. I'm also leading a bike tour of the city next month, on a route that passes by the location. Needless to say, I'm not happy, even though nobody was injured.

off topic - man in last image

By cscott (not verified) | Thu, 09/27/2007 - 9:52pm

Not to make light of a disturbing incident but I noticed one of my local characters in the last image. I see this guy all the time riding the bus to and from Roslindale, he's the man to the far left of the City Year kids. He used to carry a transistor radio to his ear, in addition to his trademark Palestinian scarf. He smells about as bad as he looks but I've never seen him drinking or ranting. Oddly enough those same City Year kids were at my son's elementary school today.

Noticed him right away

I'd never seen him before, but it was like he was surrounded by an aura of character-ness.

Let's just hope...

Let's just hope the police revoke their gun permits.

I'm surprised you didn't

I'm surprised you didn't tell us for the umpteenth million time that the guy in the truck should have been carrying his own licensed, loaded fire arm at the ready so that he could have fought off the attackers.

Gang related, Herald says

Surprised?

First thing I thought of

Was the J-Way stabbing the other day.

Something about the pickup truck.

North Cambridge shootings

By Ron Newman | Fri, 09/28/2007 - 8:45am

The usually-quiet North Cambridge neighborhood, between Porter Square and Alewife, has also suffered a recent spate of gun-related violence:

Cambridge Chronicle:
Residents report gunshots in Cambridgeport, North Cambridge
Man robbed up at gunpoint in North Cambridge
After shootings, North Cambridge residents want answers

The Alewife:
Five shots ring out in neighborhood
Shootings wake up neighbors' outrage

It must be

... those terrible "urban" people coming up on the train from that eeeville Alewife station that *we* never asked them to build - awful "city" people coming in to rob us and shoot at us. None of our good local hellspawn could be involved, nooooo.

Or maybe "suburban" people coming to the city to cause troubl

By Ron Newman | Fri, 09/28/2007 - 9:55am

The Somerville incident that I posted above was caused by two people from Randolph and Fitchburg, who somehow decided to come to our city and shoot it up.

Now why would Randolph and Fitchburg residents be in Somerville?

By adamg | Fri, 09/28/2007 - 9:58am

I'm betting a crack reporter could answer that one pretty speedily.

but the answer might be a real downer

By Ron Newman | Fri, 09/28/2007 - 10:04am

And what are you qualuding to?

By SwirlyGrrl (not verified) | Fri, 09/28/2007 - 10:12am

Fitchburg ain't suburban - it's another city. As for Randolph, perhaps they should change their name to East Compton?
