Anybody catch the anti-Taiwan demonstration at City Hall today?

Ron Newman reports:

... I emerged from the Government Center T stop in time to see a few hundred people waving Communist Chinese flags, demonstrating against Taiwanese independence. I have no idea what prompted this. It was a surreal thing to see. ...

Pretty sick for these people to do this especially with the current situation in Burma! The Chinese have supported the regime of death in Burma and the slaughter of thousands! China should be boycotted and so should the Olympic games that will be held there. The UN is an ineffective and useless body of parasites, sitting on their hands while people are butchered in their pursuit of democracy. Where were these so called defenders of democracy while this was happening?? Disgusting!

Sure it was a protest march? She's it's a celebration of a founding, even thou thats celebrating driving out the nationalists.

[i]National Day (October 1)
It is the anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 in the wake of routing the Nationalists who have since taken refuge in Taiwan. There used to be grand parades squares of major cities of the country. Now celebrations usually take the form of parties in amusement parks by day and fire-works and grand TV ensembles during the evening. Employees enjoy two paid days-off. It is also a good occasion for many people to take a short excursion to enjoy the beauty of the golden Fall.

It wasn't a march, as people were standing still, listening to speeches and waving flags. Some of the signs were definitely anti-Taiwanese.

I don't understand the Western take on issues such as these. If people are allowed to voice their opinions of independence, why can't they voice their opinion against independence? It's still the voice of the people. You know one of the most liberating movements in China were demonstrations against carving up of the East in opposition to Western imperialism in the early 1920s.

What about North Ireland? They want independence. Britain won't let them. Europe is merging into one coalition, they want to be a whole economy. So what if Chinese people protest about not wanting to be carved up just like Africa and South America?

Read Harry Harootunian's "Empire's New Clothes" - maybe it'll enlighten you about modernization theory - (person talking about Burma.) American's are in Iraq aren't they? So are the Brits. At least China's not lecturing them about that. All these new ideas on human rights, development, are just an extension of theoretical and ethical view points on humanity that aim to seek greater control and influence in developing countries. This crusade of democratization, is messing up countries that should have the RIGHT to find their own ways to develop. I'm sick of hypocrisy

Tienanmen Square, my friend, Tienanmen Square.

At least Taiwan is a functioning democracy. It has found its own way to develop - one the puppetmasters of Beijing would dearly love to stomp on with their steel-toed boots.

Nobody's saying two wrongs make a right - and nobody stopped the pro-Beijingers from protesting in Boston, either.

to find a new way to develop?

As in, they don't want to be crushed under communist China's boots. They are doing great as a de facto independent country. The only reason the UN and all nations don't recognize the country of Taiwan is that China threatens to invade, bomb, murder, and jail people there if they do. The Taiwanese people are held hostage by China's murderous threats.

So maybe that's why people remark on the demonstrations against Taiwanese independence: they're just murderous threats disguised as populism.

And while we're at it, what about Tibet? The Communist Chinese have just about beaten the voice out of that people. Now they even say only the Communist Chinese Government can determine whether the Buddha has been reincarnated! The gall! And what about the poor beleaguered Uighurs in Xinjian? When is China going to let them go free?

Face it: the Communist Chinese are imperialists too. If you're sick of hypocrisy, then stop exhibiting it.
