What would a Boston election be without last-minute scurrilous attacks?

UPDATE: Blame John Connolly.

Adam Rosi-Kessel reports getting several mailings attacking city-council candidates that don't say who put them out:

... My guess is these mailings are all meant to support John Connolly, a West Roxbury resident, attorney, and ostensibly good guy. I was feeling pretty happy about the possibility of Connolly replacing Murphy on the Council (I have to admit some unfair prejudice in that the only house in our neighborhood I've ever seen prominently posting a sign in support of Bush also features a Murphy billboard). But these questionable campaign tactics are giving me pause. Does anyone know anything more about this? ...

Edward Forry, publisher of the Dorchester Reporter, says the paper has absolutely nothing to do with a flier now being distributed in various neighborhoods (alas, he doesn't detail the contents for those of us in remoter parts of the city).

I could go into the story of how, during my campaign against Tom Finneran in 1992, the Dorchester Reporter omitted my name from the listing of candidates and stated that Finneran was running unopposed.

Yes, it STILL rankles me.

Some bozo candidate's bozo campaigners have replaced all the ferry schedules at the Navy Yard shuttle with their stoopid flyers.(I can't remember who and I'm not walking out there to check).

Worse yet, they put stickers on each side of the little wind shelter so they can seen from every angle.

This is different from grafitti, how? I doubt they will ever return to clean them up next week, if it were even legal to put them there to start with!

<some 2-digit number> Milk Street, Boston. Did you get one of these? And did it have postage stamps, or a pre-sorted first class or third-class postal permit number?

Yep, we got one. 31 Milk St.

Has a union bug, even. Like Adam, I sure would hate to think it's John Connolly doing this, although in my case, it doesn't really matter, since I wasn't planning on voting for him, anyway. But I'd put my money on a union. Has Murphy pissed off the cops or firefighters?

can you read the union bug? And does it have postage stamps, a meter, or a postal permit number? I'll take a walk by 31 Milk Street shortly on my way home, just to see what kind of building it is.

"Presorted Standard" stamp.

Bug: GCIU - 274C

who paid for a particular mailing permit number.

Googling "GCIU - 274C" says that it is the Graphic Communications International Union in Brockton. GCIU, by the way, is now part of the Teamsters Union.

That just means that the mailing was produced with union labor, not that the graphics union had anything to do with it other than printing it up.

They could have printed it, printed it for another union, or simply been hired by people who knew that their target constituency would look for that union bug.

When I used to get mailings printed up for unionized construction workers, I'd use a union shop because I knew the workers would look for that bug. UMass paid, but the union shop printed it.

and it might be interesting for someone to phone or visit them with a copy of it, and ask "who paid you to print this?"

is an old 12-story office building in Boston's financial district. The lobby has a reception desk and a building directory, but the front door was locked when I stopped by at 9:30 pm, so I could not investigate further. There is also a post office at this address.

If you're really curious, I could try to visit again on Monday during business hours.

what a useful service! Thanks, I had no idea that site existed. (But a political campaign office is probably too transient a use to show up in such a listing.)

I got these two mailings too.

They both had the exact same address, same dimensions, and same print stock.

Troubling...

Let me do some research on this one...
