That Beats WATD
We're At The Dump
The Dump
At one point during my reporting career, I had to go down to the Wellesley town dump (well, technically, the Wellesley Refuse Disposal Facility) once a week to try to get my finger on the pulse of Wellesley, when our paper expanded into that town. Great idea, but, alas, almost nobody in Wellesley had ever heard of the Middlesex News and even if they had, they were all New York Times and Wellesley Townsman readers and so they generally refused to tell me what was up. I miss traditional daily journalism sometimes, but not going down to the Wellesley town dump (or for that matter, to a specific diner on Rte. 9 in Framingham to do "stool samples" on whatever the hot topic of the morning was).
RDF
It’s been Wellesley Recycling and Disposal Facility for quite some time, which either dates your story or highlights why Wellesley residents ignore the
Framingham NewsMiddlessex NewsMetroWest Daily News.BTW, ever notice how so many of the ‘dumps’ are on the border of a town, where the neighboring community has less influence then the residents? Also how often they get sited on the southern side of a town? (I dunno why–just seems more then 25%.)
Yes, I am dating myself
And, yes, it was the Wellesley RDF and every year or so, the New York Times would do a story about this simply mahhhhvelous cultural attraction right on the Needham line where simply EVERYBODY in town went to catch up on the local news. And, yes, it was the Middlesex News, back when it was owned by Evil Texans (tm) and in direct competition with the Townsman, the Tab and NewsWest (which once, when I was running a jeremiad against stupid drivers running the lights at 135 and 27 in Natick, made up a gossip-column item about me jaywalking in the square, not that I'm bitter or anything).
And, yeah, dumps! Look at the former Boston dumps in West Roxbury (right next to Dedham and Needham) and Dorchester (Milton and Quincy). At least Acton had the consideration to stick their dump in the middle of the town (so did Concord, but Concord sucked because they put both the dump AND a trailer park right next to Walden Pond, that's how much they still hate Thoreau, that uppity good-for-nothing clown).
Dumps
Dedham returned the favor.
Middlesex News?
I delivered the Middlesex News over 25 years ago in Milford MA. Man, for a kid back then, I was making big coin! The paper was (IIRC) about $1.10 a week and most folks would give me $1.50 or $2.00. My route was pretty sizable too ... over 100 houses. Christmas was incredible. I had some subscribers leaving me 5 or 10 bucks!
Do you have any idea how many packs of baseball cards you could buy with that kind of dough???
Although, for some reason I always remember it as the "Milford Middlesex News."
Milford back in the day
Wow, those were in the wild-west days, when one of our reporters and a circulation person had to hide under desks one evening because of the gunfight outside.
Then again, you did have Screwy Louie!
And now I work at a high-tech publication staffed by ex-Snewsers, including an admin who was a circulation person in Milford back then.
Gunfire in Milford??
Really? I lived in Milford from 72 through 82 and it was white-bread suburbia as far as I knew. I was just a kid though.
cemeteries too
Always seem to be on the border of towns.
I assumed that in both cases one of the reason
is that, in addition to the other town not
getting a vote, the land was also likely cheaper.
