Heavy metal outrage in Somerville

The Somerville News reports that somebody stole 475 pounds worth of manhole and water-gate covers from Josephine Avenue on Sunday. The covers had been stacked up in piles as the city repaved the street. Police say:

It's not inconceivable that someone living right on the street rolled them into their backyard.

Scrap metal is about 15 bucks for 100lbs, and those things are pretty heavy. People risk getting electrocuted to steal copper out of construction sites, and this seems to have been way easier. Crime of opportunity?

Stand on the 3rd floor fire escape of one of the Philly-style houses and you can see everything. The backyards are tiny. Not a place to hide that much metal.
