Define Your Terms

If road rage means agressive driving alone, then I'd say Boston is probably among the top 5 cities. However, if road rage means, as I have always thought of it, people getting in verbal or physical altercations on the road, Boston is no worse than any other major city and, certainly, well below the DC Metro area. People in Boston are definately agressive drivers but its more like an agressive driver ballet. Although the bike v. car situation here is bad, mostly because we don't really have any good bike lanes or bike lane culture, you rarely see drivers doing things like running red lights or pushing through a cross-walk of pedestrians. Maybe this is setting the bar low, but the article didn't seem to set the bar at all.

Really?

Don't spend much time downtown, do ya?

On the contrary

Pedestrians clearly have the upper hand downtown, at least in the mornings an evenings. Once people start crossing, even if the light is green, drivers will stop recognizing that they have been beaten. By contrast, in DC for example, cars don't stop. Rather, they take the three-step road rage manuver: (step 1) lay on the horn while approaching the cross-walk at 30mph, (step 2) slam on brakes just as you are about to knee-cap the people in the cross-walk and (step 3) drive through the crowd while shaking your head at the pedestrians. I've seen a few people hit this way (likely poor Bostonians who thought the car would give way because of the crosswalk). This manuver can be used while running red lights and stop signs as well but it requires a very loud radio to be playing for proper form, and sometimes the brandishing of a firearm or police badge (later actually happened). New York cabs seem to use this tactic as well but they omit step 2.

"aggressive driver ballet"

that is the perfect term to describe Boston driving. I will be quoting you again and again.

I cower in local shame!

Sure, we all talk a good game when it comes to
bikes vs. cars, but aside from a few unconscious
motorists and hospitalized cyclists, where's the body count?

Yeah?
