... look in a Red Sox uniform? He might just scare the opposing pitcher to death.

Non-Sports Fan

As a non-sports fan in general and a non-Red Sox fan in particular, I was curious that no Bosox players were implicated in the performance-enhancing-drugs scandal. I happened to see the tape of this guy going down during the 10:00 o'clock news on channel 25, and he didn't run into a wall or try to score while sliding...he just swung his bat and then winced. Could he be on the road to falling apart after protracted (but undiscovered) drug use?

Drugs & Injuries

I was, by no means, a pro-level athlete, but I played ball (hard & fast-pitch soft) for well over 40 years. I can tell you that it doesn't mean you've been taking drugs if you get an injury doing something rather mundane.

I tore the meniscus in my right knee during batting practice one year. I was in good shape, had never done steroids or HGH or anything similar, never had anything worse than a sprained knee previously, and my knee just collapsed on a routine swing. It can happen.

When you take into account the force with which Ortiz swings, the torque on his wrist is considerable. There may have been quite a bit of damage sustained through his years as a player, and this was just the swing that took it over the edge. It's not an everyday occurence to be injured while swinging, but it's extremely far from damning proof of past illegal drug usage.

Have you looked at the guy?

I mean, Bonds, you can look at before/after photos and he's just different looking. Ortiz? He's a teddy bear.

Please no

If the Sox sign Barry Bonds, I think I'll be rooting for the Rays this year.
