Definitely the stops you want to close during the summer.

Needles and broken glass

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 9:01am

yeah - when I wanna go to the beach... the first places I think of are East Boston and Revere

Must have never been there

By NotSoStuckUp (not verified) | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 9:39am

Must have never been there yourself, because while it isn't the pristine CCNS, it's great beach for a day trip.

Plus you can get yourself some Kellys!

Nahaunt, and The Beaches in South Boston are also nice little getaways from the concrete and heat of the city.

mmmmmmmmm

By SwirlyGrrl | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:21pm

mmmmmmmmm ... Kellys. Served blisteringly fry-oil hot with a side of attentive seagul beggars and loud exhaust pipes.

SO what T accesible beach do

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 11:07am

SO what T accesible beach do you visit instead???

Castle Island!

By SwirlyGrrl | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 11:35am

Bring a bike and getting there from the red line is a breeze.

I've never done it, but you should be able to get to Hull and a Nantasket off the Greenbush line.

but...

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 11:49am

bikes are banned at Castle Island. the Staties will make you get off of them or issue a citation if you ride them there.

They can't stop you from riding on the public roadways

By SwirlyGrrl | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:17pm

Nobody can stop you from riding TO Castle Island and the nearby beach areas, locking your bike, and walking/swimming/roasting/etc.

bikes banned at Castle Island - only on the walkway

By Ron Newman | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:19pm

The walkway along the south side of Pleasure Bay is for pedestrians only. Otherwise, you can ride a bike anywhere around Castle Island.

Point well taken, but I

Point well taken, but I think your original comment made sense. Revere Beach is the most accessible beach for local families with a limited ability to travel long distances by car, or go to Hull via "greenbush".

I myself prefer Nahant for a quick jaunt, if only for the fact that it is missing the infamous seaweed that seems to plague most of the North Shore.

Haven't been this year, but

By anon (not verified) | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 2:56pm

Haven't been this year, but I'll take seaweed over the red goo/alge from the past few years

hull, nantasket, etc

By Em (not verified) | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:10pm

I would recommend taking a bike on the Greenbush line, if you want to visit a beach that way. From Nantasket junction, it's about a mile to Hingham harbor and/or World's end. From Cohasset station, it's between 2 and 3 miles to Nantasket beach.

Or you could take bus #220 from Quincy center to visit the Hingham town beach.

Other beaches accessible by T and bike

By Ron Newman | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:23pm

Carson Beach and L Street beaches in South Boston: walk or bike from Andrew station on the Red Line

Singing Beach: Manchester-by-the-Sea. You don't even need the bike for this one. Just walk from the station, it's not that far.

Good Harbor and Wingaersheek beaches: Gloucester

Plum Island beach: Newburyport

Crane's Beach: Ipswich. But beware, the road to the beach is fairly hilly. Ipswich and Essex ran a scheduled shuttle bus from the T station to the beach last summer, and I assume they'll do it again this year.

Nahant Beach: Lynn

Plum Island

By SwirlyGrrl | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:27pm

You can bring your bike for an absolutely scenic, flat ride though the whole sand bar, beaches, the entire 8.23 meters!

I like to meander down toward Ipswich to get home - a bit more challenging road and terrain, but scenic and Clam Box Clam Box Clam Box!

That sounds exhausting!

By Michael | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 2:24pm

8.23 meters?? :P

Scenic Route

By Gareth | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 1:52pm

You can take your bike on the ferry to Hull, also. Six bucks per ride. You can go there and back in the same day, easy; it's about a half-hour.

Hull ferry doesn't run on weekends, though

By Ron Newman | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 3:06pm

I don't understand why -- surely it would be quite popular during the summer.

they're only closing one station at a time

By Ron Newman | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:16pm

Also, there's no island at Wood Island.

Bike to the Sea - June 22!

By SwirlyGrrl | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:23pm

Ride meets at the Dockside Restaurant in Malden and heads for the ocean.

I'll get better details on time and route after this meeting ... if Ron doesn't get them first.

Repairs? What about Orient Heights?

By Route 66 | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 12:43pm

Again, O.H. station is the red headed stepchild. The station is in such bad shape I'm surprised both platforms haven't just disintegrated before our very eyes.

But, the good part is that with Orient Heights still open, you can get to Winthrop and Yirrell Beach. Yes, it has a view of the north side of Deer Island water treatment plant, but the sand is soft, there's lots of it and the water's clean.

Repairs? Why Wood Island?

By BStu | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 3:27pm

Isn't Wood Island one of the newer stations on the Blue Line? When I lived in East Boston, anyway, it seemed pretty evidently more modern than all of the surrounding stations. Airport obviously gets the nod now, but last time I was down on the Blue Line last summer, that still seemed to be the case. I'm not sure I see why they are doing work on Wood Island above other stations on the Blue Line or even the rest of the MBTA. Is it really falling apart that fast?

Harbor Islands

By Em (not verified) | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 1:03pm

If you don't mind paying the $14 fee per adult ($8 for a child 3-11), there's the beach on Lovells Island in Boston Harbor. Ferries to the islands leave from Long wharf, near Aquarium station.

Doh! Wollaston Beach

By SwirlyGrrl | Thu, 06/19/2008 - 3:15pm

Just look at a red line map - and you don't even need a bike to get there (although it would make it easier to find a good spot).
