How not to handle communications with parents

Unspecified threats made against Roslindale students in general, so Boston Police stepped up surveillance of all public schools in the neighborhood on June 16. Officials at some schools told parents, officials at other schools didn't, you can imagine how parents of some elementary-school kids were a bit disturbed to find cops at the schools when they brought the kids to school in the morning..

My wife found out about this
My wife found out about this at drop-off, then she called me to discuss if we should bring our kid home. The whole unspecified nature of the threat made it hard to decide, one the hand it was probably a "bomb threat" by some disgruntled middle schooler on the other hand they had taken it seriously enough to post cops. We traded theories on the threat, my wife went with non-custodial parent dispute and I figured it could be related to the "give us money or we'll cut your nipples off" story posted here. In the end we went with the herd and let our son stay at school but it didnt feel good. In some ways I would have rather not known since there wasn't enough information to make a judgment. My son's school has been on lock-down a couple times this year and twice this year the nearby Bates School has had to deal with shootings down the street, hard to know whats going on.
