What a difference a year makes

Dirty Water reports from the Pour House:

...When Tampa took the lead Wednesday night suddenly the entire bar was chanting TAMPA SUCKS.

Wondering how long before the website and t-shirts appear as we have to face facts. ...

Tampa Sucks?

Dont get me wrong, Im a huge sox fan, but chanting tampa sucks? They're better than the sox right now. Def not my favorite side of sox 'fans' when any team that beats us or dares become a rival automatically sucks.

maybe they finally visited

maybe they finally visited new york, and found out that it is actually an amazing place? I'm guessing Tampa does suck, though I've never been

Tampa's Turn?

By Ron Newman | Thu, 07/03/2008 - 10:20am

Tampa Bay is the only MLB team that has never qualified for the playoffs, and the only one that has never had a winning season. They also have the second-lowest payroll in the major leagues.

We've had a nice run in Boston with the Red Sox from 1995 to 2007. It wouldn't especially bother me if someone else (besides the Yankees) had a chance in this division occasionally.

Tampa

Sometimes the best baseball you will see played is at AAA Pawtucket or AA Portland as those players want so badly to be promoted to Boston.

Tampa right now reminds me of the Montreal Expos of the early 90's who had a lot of young talent but then sold off all their players.

Ron pointed out the payroll size of Tampa. Will they able to keep these players?

Marlins

Word is they will follow the model that the Marlins have used with some success. Build a young, talented team, win world series, "blow up" team by trading the now-veterans for an embarrassment of new prospects. Rinse wash repeat.

That's not a great way to build a fan base, though

I would not recommend that the Rays follow the Marlins example . Are there really any Marlins fans?

It's in poor taste

New York sucks! New York sucks!

To be honest, I don't even care about that one anymore, now that the demon has been exercised. But it still resonates as a timeless classic, so I don't begrudge folks using it. But the idea that sucks is a suitable all purpose baseball chant is a sad commentary on fan sensibilities. It completely disrespects the original phrase, earned over a few decades by the Yankee organization. And can we really raise that much ire so quickly over a brief flare up by Tampa? It is the Ray's fans who ought to chant Boston sucks! We in Boston should merely acknowledge that Tampa has a team of some sort, and move on.
