Digital cameras not to blame
It wasn't digital cameras that killed Polaroid, except in the sense of finishing it off. It went into decline decades ago.
Backward Management
They made the overly-conservative mistake of bringing in "hold the tiller" managers from old-line industries and letting them stay way too long. Why fund R&D when you have a product already?
I was working over there doing health study monitoring during the final decline and there was no shortage of older workers and retirees visiting who had more than a little to say about all the missed opportunities because of management who didn't understand the nature of a technology-dependent business.
Good assessment
My father worked at Polaroid from the mid 1960s (starting as a staff photographer for Dr. Land and ending on the management team of its law enforcement imaging division) until its demise then did a few years at the successor company with the same name. He and his buddies from the company's pioneer days could not believe what they saw happen to the company in its last few years and held feelings from no love for to utter contempt for a certain ex Black & Decker CEO that they watched lead the company into its demise (who walked away with a pretty bonus after most employees' pensions were taken over by the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation). Swirlygrrl, chances are you have met him (If you did, you guys would definitely have talked about his being a native of Medford, and his growing up in a prominent business that still bears our family's surname located in a historic house right smack dab in Medford Square).
Waltham already shut?
Rt-128 was slow the other day (imagine that), and I happened to notice that the
Waltham buildings look like the windows were out already. Is anybody home?
Yes, the Waltham plant is closed
Seeing what's left of the Waltham plant was what triggered this to begin with.
Haunted
You would think real-estate like that would be worth several clams.
But it looks haunted! Broken dreams everywhere.
