Great post.

Let me know when you get to aisle 9; I need some baked goods and want to see if there are any muffins left.

WTF?????

Listen, buster

We don't all live in your fancy South End with your 63,000 chi-chi restaurants serving frou-frou drinks and little tapa things that cost $10 apiece, where people start frothing in excitement when they hear that some new Lao/Catalan fusion place is opening up in SoWaTaguSiam.

Some of us quietly live out here in the burbs, and, yeah, we may only have one Nepali restaurant, but dammit, we do have Roche Bros. It's not just a supermarket, it's a community center (well, not THE community center, which, come to think of it, is named after the Roches). You betcha my wife, who went shopping there today, told me about the changes when I got home from work.

Oh, and the muffins aren't in an aisle; they're over by the Rotunda of Fancy-Shmancy Take-Out Food.

Community Center?

I wondered why my Birkenstock+socks were garnering askance looks from the fashion police.

Roche Motel?

Is that planned for the next phase of renovation/construction?

Why are these floors so sticky ...

Oh

Oh. Since I didn't listen to the audio, I had no idea what the f- he was posting about, or why he needed two posts to explain.

There are some strange product combinations happening in the aisles... I'll have to pay closer attention next time to see what's next to what.

Is this the Year of the Great Supermarket Reinventions? Various Stars and Shaws being redone (and labeled one way or the other, willy-nilly); Stop & Shop's new logo - a travesty against ancient tradition alone; Roche Brother's new way of doing business; or even the attempted frou-frou remake of Arlington's own Stop & Shop.

Could this signal some deeper trend than politics and financial markets? Do our local supermarket leaders know more than we do about the future? Only time will tell...

You left out...

Wild Oats stores closing and then reopening as Whole Foods.

Well played, sir!

How appropriate to use the greengrocer's apostrophe in a story about a market:

Listen to this audio report from the new aisle's of Roche Bros. [mp3]

I'll have to check out

whether my axe to grind with RocheBros has been corrected: the odd decision to pre-cut deli meat.
(As previously discussed here in item #16340.)

They do have a great prepared-food section though, and lots of ice cream!

I like the odd item pairings, too. They're not alone in that- I think it was Stop & Shop that once had "Birdseed - Automotive" or something like that.
