The prison of brotherly love
A Mattapan man was sentenced to two to three years in prison today after admitting that not only did he steal his brother's identity to get car insurance, he then committed insurance fraud under his brother's name.
Raymond DeGraca, 56, pleaded guilty in Suffolk Superior Court, according to the state Attorney General's office, which had charged him with ten counts of theft, four counts of perjury, two counts of giving a false name to law enforcement, motor vehicle insurance fraud, larceny over $250, attempted larceny and making a false statement on a motor vehicle registration application.
According to a statement, DeGraca assumed his brother's identity to get car insurance after his own license had been suspended. The next year, he filed a false insurance claim for an accident he said had happened in Revere. Unfortunately for him, the driver he claimed hit him told her insurance company there was no accident, which led to an investigation. Meanwhile, DeGraca continued to use his brother's identity in unrelated criminal cases in West Roxbury and Dorchester district courts, the AG's office says.
