Well I guess thats what you get for protesting the 7 dollar tolls! Isnt it amazing that no matter what you do if you live in East Boston someone is always trying to screw you over.

I got my postcard a few weeks ago, and went in this morning to renew my Fast Lane pass. Do they have an explanation for why some people didn't get theirs? That seems odd.

I wouldn't discount the USPS. My mail delivery has taken a distinct downturn during the past year. I love getting my local newspaper two days late.

That's funny because who says it's only East Boston, North End and South Boston residents who drive through the Harbor tunnels frequently and so deserve a discount?

How do three and only three Boston neighborhoods merit a special deal with Mass Port? And yet no other Boston neighborhood and no other municipality does?

This is the kind of ham-handed policy making that Boston is known for and should be embarrassed to implement. Wouldn't you love to know which Mass Port hack cut this deal with which mayor or city councilors and whether money changed hands?

Why would they think this policy would stand up to scrutiny?

I don't mind those guys getting a break. I just don't understand why our pols think it's ok to cut certain people a break and not everyone. I live in Boston. I use the tunnel. People in Medford and Cambridge use the tunnel.

Its because they pretty much have to use the tunnel to head in that direction (North/South/East/West depending on which community it happens to be.) It is also hosted in their respective communities , with all the traffic problems that go with it.

Its the same reason why Chelsea and Charlestown get a break on the Tobin (it used to be free for them, but now they get a break.) "Hey we dropped this bridge/tunnel on top of your community, cutting up old neighberhoods and causing traffic nightmares on your streets, but guess what you get to pay a little less then everyone else to use it."

Its not because of the frequency of use, its mitigation for dealing with the monstrosities.

I use the tunnel. People in Medford and Cambridge use the tunnel.

So do people in Somerville, but I try to avoid using the tunnel(s) as much as possible.

Regarding ham-handed policies; Old habits die hard, especially here in Boston. The right to know who MassPort cut a deal with should be a right for everybody, but, my hunch is that it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Doesn't mean there was one.

Sheesh, people: East Boston is basically an island connected to the rest of Boston by tunnels. Why should they be screwed by tolls just to get downtown when the rest of us can get there for free?

Now the North End, that one I have a harder time figuring out ...

Everybody bemoans the "politics of Boston" or the deals being cut with people until it involves them. Plain and simple man of these deals were cut in order for the host communities to accept the intrusion. If the deal was not cut, and those communities were not given a discount you would still be using the old roads to get everywhere because the communities and their reps would have never have let it happen in the first place. Cambridge blocked 695 from being built (along with some other communities) and that would have been beneficial to others, Bedford and the surrounding area managed to block expanding the local airport from companies like Fedex and small planes... Its not fair to expect people from places like East Boston to just suck it up and take everyone elses crap when you cant build windmills off of Cape Cod.
