Flaherty bid for open government to start with apology for closed government

The Globe reports mayoral hopeful Michael Flaherty will publicly admit it was wrong of him as city council president to ban the public from meetings involving the Boston Redevelopment Authority between 2004 and 2006:

... At the time, I thought I was acting appropriately," Flaherty said yesterday in a telephone interview. "The courts decided things should have been handled differently. Lesson learned. My administration will be about transparency, accountability, and taking responsibility. ...

Too little, too late, says Kevin McCrea, who, in addition to running against Flaherty for Tom Menino's job, was a co-plaintiff on successful lawsuits over those meetings. He blogs:

... I wonder just how much input Michael Flaherty needs to make a good decision? Michael Flaherty was warned and told numerous times that his actions were illegal, but yet it never sunk in until he decided he wanted to be Mayor (where he is not subject to the Open Meeting Law!) Remember, he is an attorney who used to work in the DA's office and his father is a judge, plus they hired $600 an hour lawyers at our expense, and he still didn't understand this was legally wrong? ...

The campaign strategy of running against your own record of opposing government openness and accountability: The guano is piling higher and deeper and we've barely just started this mayoral race.

Does he really think we're that stoooooooooopid??? If he gets elected, maybe we are.

I like McCrea and he has some solid ideas, but his constant self-promotion borders on egomania.

Hey we all make mistakes. I really do not think that 100% of meetings should be open to the public anyway. Because people get too personal and we elect these politicians to office to speak for us. If we do not like what they are doing then we should vote them out. I must say that I think it is time for a change but I am thinking the fact is the only person that could possibly beat Menino is Flaherty.

Yoon has not been in politics or on the council that long nor has he lived here in Boston long. Remember he is from ARLINGTON.

MCcrea couldn't even get elected to the city council. Does he really think he is going to become Mayor? He is another no name candidate just like Doug Bennett. Doug Bennett is a REPUBLICAN running for office in the city of Boston are your serious? and he is from NANTUCKET.

I have always voted for Mayor Menino but I am still decided because I like Tom and Mike.
