Geez! So it turns out "Partisans" was only on loan to us anyway, but still, all of a sudden they're just gone and if you still want to see metallic horses that haven't eaten in years, you'll have to hoof it all the way to Copley Place.
On Pelican In Her Piety, Jason says it's another case of Beacon Hill nobs being just generally grumbly about pretty much everything:
... It's not the last time someone will hear "they didn't fit" coming from a resident of Beacon Hill. The Boston Common seems to be a perfect place for a statue honoring freedom fighters. ...
On Left Center Left, Chris basically says feh:
... The removal of Partisans represents not a struggle between rich versus poor, but one between a traditionalist bourgeoisie and parts of the bourgeoisie attracted to a politically vanguard, modernist art. Now belonging pretty much to the latter, I'm saddened and annoyed when Boston chooses ugly bronze monuments over Calderesque public art, faux brownstone architecture over new design vernaculars, and "history" over relevance. But let's be honest about who's not fitting in here.
Derek writes on The Third Decade that its removal sucks:
... Granted, I'm no art expert, but the best thing about the statue is how striking it is. The message it conveys and the feelings it evokes are part of what make it so powerful and so wonderful on display. It's truly a shame to see how small minds have forced it out. I guess San Francisco will be just that much better once it receives our "gift."

at the entrance to Copley Place. I guess other people were doing the same thing, because they eventually moved the horse up onto a pedestal that you couldn't easily lift a bicycle onto.

Any chance we can ship that Irish Famine Memorial to San Francisco as well? Here's a glimpse:
