Restrictions on teen drivers? What about elderly drivers?
Wrestling with Truth says old people get into a lot more accidents but that they have powerful lobbying groups such as AARP and teens don't:
So we see the tyranny of one of the country's most successful lobbying organizations in a way that violates common sense and puts lives in jeopardy.
Jody on the Big DumpTruck says she feels terrible for the parents of all the recently killed and injured kids, but wonders where the parental responsbility is:
... My heart bleeds for the father of a local boy who put three of his friends into the ICU - one of whom still isn't breathing on her own - but really, sir, are you doing your son any favors when you blame this accident on the upkeep of a dirt road that is marked with huge "Pass at your own risk" signs? This is a road NOBODY uses, and your son was speeding on it with a car full of kids he shouldn't have been transporting. How can you possibly try to blame this on the town? ...
More thoughts:
Tim on Boston Crazy Driving writes that we can't really debate the issue before seeing statistics on whether 16-year olds are really worse drivers than 17-year olds or if the matter is one of experience behind the wheel regardless of age.
Ken Savage: Raising the legal driving age in Massachusetts might be a good idea - but parents need to teach their children well.
Jenn Martinelli: Raising the driving age for teenagers won't decrease accidents, it will just raise the age at which they all have accidents.
The View from Neponset: Making kids wait a year to be a bad driver is ineffectual:
We need to teach kids how to drive properly and safely before we let them hit the roads. ...
Andy at Mass. Revolution Now: More regulation won't make driving safer:
... Such a regulation is haphazard, picked out of a hat, attempt to insulate bad judgment. Why cell phones and not changing cds, something just as distracting and just as common and ubiquitous as cell phones? Why age 17 for a license as some propose and not 18? These lines are arbitrary and bear no real effect on the desired outcome. ...

Elderly Driving
First I think the age should be raised for driving and more limitations should be placed on teens, along with a lot more drivers education. Second most adults could use some more education too. Third my Granmother is in her 80's, half blind, has no depth perseption and can't drive worth crap but still managed to pass both the written and driving portion of her driving test wich scares the crap out of me. Actually my 16 year old nefew drives better than my granmother. So I half to agree with the comment on older drivers.
