How did Jerry McDermott get elected from Allston-Brighton?

By Ron Newman | Fri, 09/22/2006 - 7:31am

If you took a poll in Allston-Brighton, asking which was more popular, the Citgo Sign or George W. Bush, the results wouldn't be even close.

The one poll that counts

College students in Allston/Brighton as a rule don't vote in local elections. Old Russian emigres, however, do.

does anyone else think that every democrat decrying chavez is a bloody hypocrite, and that everyone is entitled to voice an opinion about the US govt, regardless of their tact or nationality?

(regardless of the fact that chavez happens to be right)

Bravo! You couldn't be more

Bravo! You couldn't be more right! I honestly have been laughing at all the comments and questions about how McDermott got elected. Liberals chastise him for doing what they are all "defending" - exerising his freedom of speech!!

McDermott merely exercising his freedom of speech?

Blondie, is someone trying to silence McDermott or prevent him from speaking? No--they're responding to his ridiculous proposal. What's more, as an elected official, his comments are read as trial balloons for city policies he may try to pass. It's more than appropriate for people to register what they think of his policy proposals!

Do you think that criticizing what an elected official says somehow denies his or her freedom of speech? If I say that I disagree with Mayor Menino, am I limiting his freedom?

heeee

I appreciate that the banner on the comments page involves a closeup of the Citgo sign.

I disagree with Bush and I applaud Chavez

In countries like Venezuela, at least the can safely practice their freedon of speech, without being chastised as traitor or not a patriot. In these Bush-administration days, the modus operandi of the administration, in politics, and in popular America is to chastise anyone who critisises Bush or his War in Iraq.

Chavez is just saying what the whole world can't say outloud. We as Americans should stop thinking that we can just forget the thousands of lives that have been killed over Bush's fantasies with a speech that appeals to our patriostism.

I don't care what everybody else says in politics...Chavez can speak his mind. That's the country I'd rather be...where I can speak without being chastised. And for the democrat that felt offended that another head of state came to "American" soil....read some more politician...the U.N. is international territory.

Have you been to Venezuela?

If you don't believe exactly as Chavez does, good luck. His country is a mess thanks to him -- no matter what side of the political bandwagon you happen to fall on in this country.

I happen to not be able to stand anything going on in Washington right now, but I'll take a life here any day over a life there. And I bet the majority of Venezuelans would agree.

Isn't it amazing that every time someone actually exercises their freedom of speech in the very country that prides itself on its freedoms, there is a mass knee-jerk reaction of immaturity such as this threat of sign removal? I am really considering a relocation to Canada right now....and these stories are helping along my decision nicely. "You said something I don't like......so, I'm gonna.....do something to get back at you in the most passive-aggressive indirect way possible." GROW UP!
