Crack on the Orange Line

Angela relays an account from her boyfriend about a recent experience at the Mass. Ave. stop on the Orange Line:

... He noticed the man had two lit cigarettes sitting on the bench. He immediately recognized that for one man to have two lit cigarettes just burning meant only one thing - he was preparing ashes for smoking crack. ... Even more astounding, as the man lit his pipe and smoked it, he opted to face the stairs instead of turning his back to the wall. It's obvious he didn’t care who watched him smoke his crack. ...

How did you know that you need ashes to prepare crack?

You can use ashes to make soap, too. Would I lye to ya?

So are people that live in places where drug use and manufacture are so common that people talk about these things all the time.

I could tell you how to make a lot of interesting and deadly things. That doesn't mean I use them or have any interest in doing so.

I can't speak for her, but...

...I've learned about methods of administering drugs in health class in high school, then in my premed classes in undergrad, then in psychopharmacology, then in workshops about working with people who use substances.

I've also seen similar information disseminated at neighborhood association meetings and in pamphlets for parents. If you know the specific ways in which drugs are administered and affect the body, you can be aware of whether your neighbors/friends/family/employees are using drugs, and you have a better understanding of how drugs affect people and how they might change behavior and/or interact with medications. This is great knowledge to have.

BTW, one doesn't need to use ashes to smoke crack; one can also use some sort of mesh or similar material for a filter. Also a good piece of knowledge; if you work in a school or similar setting, you can ask the custodian how frequently the little mesh filters disappear from the sink faucets. This doesn't necessarily imply crack use, as many drugs can be smoked through a filter, but you at least know whether people are smoking things.
