Whalehead King is there when the Italian card players erupt in anger and the Asian mahjong players follow suit and a mother of a young tot takes decisive action to cool things down.

Kudos to the mother who gave the good cooling-down advice,
and to the hot-tempered instigator for following it, thus defusing a potential sizzler of a situation.
A New Age
Many older people were raised to respond by "putting up their dukes" and "not run from a fight" and such. You still see that attitude around here and there. It was acceptable and maybe reasonable in a time when guns were so much less prevalent and certain areas of the US had far more rigid social class structures.
Kids are now taught strategies for not escalating fights (without being completely passive)from the time they first get to preschool, and parents are now taught ways to reinforce that. It was only natural that such a parent would urge older people to set a good example and use a such a strategy with them - effectively, I might add.
