Roxbury woman stabbed to death; man charged

Boston Police report a woman in her 50s was found with stab wounds around 11:15 p.m. yesterday at 127 Amory St.. She was rushed to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Charles Cherry, 66, of Roxbury, was arrested and charged with her murder.

Dorchester murder suspect arrested in Jamaica

Richard Parris, 39, of Roxbury, is charged with the Aug. 27 stabbing death of Sheldon Andrews, 27, on Geneva Avenue in Dorchester.

Parris was arrested in Kingston Airport after getting off an Air Jamaica flight from Atlanta, but before he could board another flight for Barbados, the Suffolk County DA's office and Boston Police say. In a statement, DA Dan Conley said:

Let this be a message to anyone who would use deadly violence on our streets. We will spare no effort to identify you and we will travel any distance to catch you.

Officials charge the two men got into a fight before Parris went for a knife. Parris now faces a rendition hearing in Jamaica to determine if he can be sent back to Boston to face arraignment in Dorchester District Court.

The sword in the store

Boston Police report that a man wielding a sword walked into Jamie's Variety, 113 H. St. in South Boston shortly after 2 p.m. on Sept. 1 and demanded money. However, the man, clad in a black hoodie and wearing a mask, fled before finishing the robbery, police say.

More successful was a guy in a green Irish knit sweater and Timberland boots who held up the Tedeschi's at 405 W. Broadway with a knife near midnight on Aug. 31. He got away with $100, police say.

Supreme Judicial Court says no new trial for Charlestown 99 murderers

The Supreme Judicial Court today rejected an attempt by Anthony Clemente and his son Damian to get new trials for killing four mobsters in the Charlestown 99 back in 1995.

The two argued they should get new trials in part because of a ruling - handed down after their convictions - that would have let them show the jury just what sort of SOBs the dead men really were. They'd claimed the shootings were actually in self defense because the four were planning on murdering Damian.

The court ruled today, however, that the judge in the trial let them introduce considerable evidence as to the basic nastiness of the victims and that even under the new rule, they still would have been convicted.

Police commissioner hunts down Roche Bros. shoplifter without resorting to Bat Signal

When Ed Davis stopped by the West Roxbury Roche Bros. for some shopping and saw a shoplifter race out the door, he couldn't just stand by. So he joined store security officers (wait? Roche. Bros. has security officers?) and helped grab the guy on nearby Belgrade Avenue, the Globe reports.

Ed. parochial note: As a frequent visitor to that store, the story left me wondering just how far down Belgrade the guy got. Did he get across the parkway, or did they nab him by that little field behind the old gas station?

Manhunt in Cambridge

Several State Police cruisers flew down my normally quiet street in Cambridgeport, then dozens of Cambridge and State police descended on a several square-block area nearby. Cops on bikes, motorcycles, helicopters, K-9 dogs, etc. Looks like the guy they were chasing bailed out and they're still trying to find him.

Anyone have details? The guy they were chasing must have been a huge threat, to justify the speed at which they were driving (assuming they were following their written pursuit policy).

BU freshman from Kansas learns about the harsh realities of life in Allston after his iPod, GPS and radio are stolen from his car parked on Comm. Ave.

... He ran back to the apartment and told his roomies what happened. They were all very upset on his behalf. Then one of them asked him how the thief got in. As it turns out, the kid from Kansas left his doors unlocked and everything in plain sight because that is the way he "does things at home."

Man acquitted in alleged vengeance killing

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today acquitted Ernest Ferguson of charges he murdered a Brockton man in retaliation for the man's friends shooting him in the face 12 years earlier, the Suffolk County DA's office announced.

Ferguson left Boston after Bryan Whitsey was murdered while visiting relatives in Dorchester in 2005 and was arrested in Baltimore.

Fire-setting cat killer gets 2 1/2 years

Luigi Epifinia, 25, convicted last month of killing an East Boston cat, then using its flaming body to try to set a triple decker on fire. After he gets out - and he is getting a 15-month credit for time already served - he will serve five years on probation for beating a man with a frying pan, the Suffolk County DA's office reports.
