Is nothing sacred over there anymore? Apparently not content to just move the bread and seltzer around, now Roche Bros. in West Roxbury has removed the white frosting from the Triple Berry Blast muffins, Matt O'Malley reports. O'Malley quickly adds he hopes this was just a mistake by the bakery department:

... However, if this frosting-free change is permanent, then God save the Commonwealth.

The parking lot at Roche Bros. in West Roxbury was insane tonight. Oh, right, it's always like that. Inside, they had plenty of milk and eggs, but looks like they had to break out the emergency bread replacements.

Can the Roche Bros. deli counter become even delier?

The Swellesley Report points us to this press release about Roche Bros. installing a sophisticated DeliVision system designed to make ordering stuff at the deli faster and funner than ever before, by letting you order at a self-serve kiosk rather than taking some Beetlejuice-like number.

Now, obsessive Roche Bros. customers are probably already scratching their heads, since the West Roxbury store has had a self-serve deli kiosk for several months now. And, to be honest, I can't really tell from the product sheet how DeliVision is superior to the current system, but with a name like DeliVision, it just has to be awesome. Well, there is one difference: DeliVision will let the store show ads to people ordering at the kiosk, rather than the simple, boring list of deli meats the current system provides. And who doesn't need more ads in their life? Especially when sliced up thin by DeliVision.

It appears the legislative wrangling that has been stalling activity on Beacon Hill since August is finally over. This afternoon, Westwood's home rule petition to allow an off-premises beer and wine license for potential Westwood Station tenant Wegmans, was passed in the House after Canton Representative Galvin dropped his objections.

Why don't they have traffic reports at Roche Bros.?

Roche Bros. MEXICAN meat ~ Be Aware

I was picking up some ground beef at Roche Bros. in West Roxbury on 10/12/08, and for the 1st time, I noticed that most of the packages were marked "Product of US, Canada, Mexico". My guess is that it's from Mexico. I found this alarming, and so did another shopper. I did find one kind of ground beef on display, much more expensive, that was solely from the US.

I am going to check out Stop & Shop and Shaw's to see if things are the same there.

Has anyone else noticed?

Roche Bros. is changing the layout of its aisles - especially down by the frozen foods and ice cream.

Oh, you laugh, but this is big news in West Roxbury (the West Roxbury Shaw's is doing some remodeling of its own, but, really, who cares?).

When Ed Davis stopped by the West Roxbury Roche Bros. for some shopping and saw a shoplifter race out the door, he couldn't just stand by. So he joined store security officers (wait? Roche. Bros. has security officers?) and helped grab the guy on nearby Belgrade Avenue, the Globe reports.

Ed. parochial note: As a frequent visitor to that store, the story left me wondering just how far down Belgrade the guy got. Did he get across the parkway, or did they nab him by that little field behind the old gas station?

Say, where'd you get that sandwich?

If it's a party-platter sandwich from Roche Bros. or Sudbury Farms, and you got it between July 31 and Aug. 2, get a bag now and throw it out. The state Department of Public Health reports the sandwiches, typically sold in party platters, could contain an unlisted ingredient: Listeria monocytogenes.

Sample party platter of doom (from DPH):

Listeria does not affect most people, but can cause serious problems in the elderly, newborns and people with compromised immune systems, starting with flu-like symptoms, the state says. It can also cause pregnant women to miscarry.

The FDA says about 285 pounds of potentially infected sandwiches were distributed by World Class Canapes, Inc. of Wilmington.
