Big day for arresting alleged murderers in Roslindale

In the morning, police arrested a Beechland Street resident for a Somerville murder. Then, around 2 p.m., Boston Police arrested a Mississippi man off Poplar Street for an execution-style murder in Ontario.

Lenworth A. Spence, 27, of Jackson, Mississippi, is wanted for the March 7, 2007 murder of a man in Oro-Medonte, Ont. Police there charge Spence and five other men kidnapped their victim, then drove him to a remote area and shot him to death.

Boston Police say Spence had been tracked to the Business Street area of Hyde Park. When he got in a car, they followed him to Poplar by Dale Street and Glencliff Road in Roslindale, where they arrested him. In addition to charging him with being a fugitive, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense, police also charged Spence with driving without a license.

Alleged thug from Washington-Beech arrested for Somerville murder

Marcus Amos, 20, charged with murder at a Somerville housing project last night.

Amos pleaded innocent at his arraignment, was ordered held without bail until a dangerousness hearing on Friday, according to the Middlesex County DA's office.

The Transcript reports Amos was arrested on a cocaine-possession charge on Beechland Street last October.

Police cracking down on park loiterers in Roslindale, West Roxbury

Boston Police said they would go after miscreants in local parks after vandals cut down trees and left behind sex devices at the Hynes Field playground in West Roxbury. And this morning, police report on the arrest of a gaggle of allegedly boozy teens at Fallon Field in Roslindale around 11 p.m. yesterday:

[O]fficers observed a group of individuals huddled together near the basketball courts. As officers approached the area from Walworth St. they observed the suspects knocking over beer cans and placing plastic cups containing alcohol on the ground. Officers also observed several empty containers of alcohol on the ground. Officers approached and questioned the suspects and found them to be minors in possession of alcohol. The officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the suspects.

The alleged loitering louts were taken down to Area E-5 over in West Roxbury for the obligatory phone calls to mom and dad.

New Rozzie Chinese takeout place won't leave you hungry

One thing Roslindale doesn't lack is Chinese take-out places. So it was kind of surprising to see yet another one open up, this one at the fortuitously numbered 888 South Street, where Tex's used to be, across from the old Longfellow School.

The other day, I gave Hong Kong Cafe 888 a try for lunch.

Seems like the only time you ever hear of this guy, the august state rep from Hyde Park (and my small sliver of Roslindale) is when he manages to grind the legislature to a halt over some issue that doesn't involve his district at all (anybody remember how he tied up the disposition of the old Boston State Hospital for years?). This time: A liquor license for some supermarket in Westwood.

The whistling buses of Forest Hills

A few years ago, the MBTA replaced all the stinky diesel buses running out of the Forest Hill yard with clean CNG buses. Yay! Only now a lot of them have developed this interesting characteristic: They whistle as they go. Really loudly. You can often tell when a bus is a few blocks away because you hear something that sounds like a tea kettle or an elephant, or maybe an elephant holding a tea kettle.

Canadians among us

It's a little after 8 a.m., and they must be having some sort of tournament down at the George Wright Golf Course because the entire neighborhood is being serenaded with "Oh, Canada" over the giant loudspeakers I didn't know they had there. A good thing we're all up, eh? But for those of us still sleeping, here comes "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Alleged serial junior thugs nabbed in Dorchester, Roslindale

Boston Police report arresting a 16-year-old on charges related to two armed holdups in Dorchester on Tuesday - one at 1872 Dorchester Ave., the other at an unspecified location. In both cases, the kid allegedly brandished a gun; police say he had accomplices.

Meanwhile, the Transcript reports Boston Police have charged a 15-year-old and Danny Olivares of Forest Hills for four unarmed robberies on or near Washington Street in Roslindale and West Roxbury between April and July.

Herbicide Company that can eradicate Poison Ivy/Sumac/Oak??

HELP!!! Does anyone know a company or individual who can identify and spray to destroy poison ivy? This is the 4th time I've caught it since May, and I am ready to just concrete my whole yard in West Roxbury & paint it green (there goes the neighborhood!!)....I have searched the internet to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
