Gawker, a Web site that pretty much captures the New York zeitgeist (you know, swaggering and obnoxious and obsessed with stuff nobody outside Manhattan cares about, like what's on the cover of Vanity Fair), does raise a good question today: Why is some guy from Mansfield in tears in Rockefeller Center after the announcement that New York would not be getting the 2012 Olympics?

Tell you what, young Jake: You put together a bid for Mansfield, Mass. - which will cost your tax dollars, and will overload your police department, will create unimaginable traffic jams, and will fill your city with fanny-packed, infrequently showered European tourists - you do that, and we'll totally support your effort. ...
