A rotted tree next to our place decides to fall... directly on to an idling taxicab. He'd been sitting there for all of two minutes, and WHAM. Fortunately he wasn't hurt, but it was a close call.

Adam Pieniazek is enjoying a nice bike ride on Columbia Road in Dorchester when some fat putz in a rustbucket begins slamming his horn and demanding Pieniazek pull over to let him through. Pieniazek did pull to the side, but didn't stop, which only further enraged the guy. He reports that the guy, who appeared to be Puerto Rican or Dominican, finally exhausted his supply of expletives and yelled:

Do you know where you are white boy?

Pieniazek, a Dot rat, finally lost him at a light - but not until he took down his license-plate number. He wonders: Should he use the handy motorist-complaint form he downloaded?

This is how entrenched bureaucracies threaten public policy. Mass Pike usage drops by 3.5% in May without any change in tolls and the Turnpike authority responds with concern about authority revenues.

Here's the appropriate response:

Express elation with the drop in driving
Demand that state subsidy shift towards the growing MBTA ridership (up 5.3% in May)
Increase tolls to encourage greater shift to transit

Agency also bans large trucks from the bridge

Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) officials today announced that effective Saturday morning, June 28, the inside lanes in both directions on the Longfellow Bridge will be closed to all traffic.

Also, all large trucks will be prohibited from the Longfellow, and will be detoured to other bridges across the Charles River. Cars, buses, and light trucks will continue traveling on the outside lanes of the bridge.
