Four shot at Hyde Park convenience store; one shot in Uphams Corner

For those keeping track: So far Boston is up to seven shootings this holiday weekend, two of them fatal (a third man was murdered with a bag containing something hard).

Boston Police report four people were shot at the Tedeschi's (formerly the Store 24) at 1187 Hyde Park Ave. around 2 a.m. today.

Police say the four were approached by three or four young men, who opened fire. The four got into their car and fled to 142 West St., where they called police:

Victim #1 had been shot through the left hand, victim #2 had been shot on the left side of the stomach, victim #3 had been shot on the left thigh, and victim #4 had been shot on the inner left thigh.

All were taken to local hospitals; all expected to survive.

Around 4:19 this morning, police report, a man was shot at repeatedly - and hit at least twice - in his car at 15 Elder St. in Uphams Corner. Despite his injuries, he was able to drive himself to Boston Medical Center, police say.

Finally, police say they managed to arrest a bike-riding gunman near Whitfield Street and Wheatland Avenue around 11:30 last night before he managed to shoot anybody. Gregory Davis, 18, of Dorchester, was arrested on charges related to possession of a loaded semi-automatic firearm.

Died on the Fourth of July

A 17-year-old was fatally shot in the head at a July Fourth cookout around 8 p.m. in Hyde Park, Boston Police and the Globe report.

Boston Police say they found the teen lying in the street at 11 Edwardson St. He was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he died a few hours later.

Liquarry Jefferson's father charged in connection with JP, Hyde Park holdups

The father of Liquarry Jefferson, the little boy accidentally shot to death last year, was one of two men arrested yesterday for a pair of brazen convenience-store holdups last month, Boston Police report.

Liquarry's father, 28, and also named Liquarry, and Nazareth Perkins, 37, were both captured on in-store video, according to Boston Police, who say they are looking for at least two more men. In both incidents, the robbers used silver-colored guns to order employees to the floor and make off with money and lottery tickets. Jefferson was charged with drug possession while Perkins was charged with armed robbery (masked) and assault by means of a dangerous weapon (hand gun).

The elder Jefferson has a lengthy record of violence. Last year, the Globe reported his record includes beating his son's mother (with a barbell and belt) when she was two months pregnant with him (at the time, she was herself facing charges of stabbing Jefferson in the stomach). He's been convicted of manslaughter for helping another man stab a guy to death in 1997 and of a string of armed robberies.

Little Liquarry Jefferson's mother and stepbrother face charges of involuntary manslaughter and lying to investigators in connection with his death. Prosecutors say the stepbrother left a loaded gun lying around.

Boston Police report that a Seminole, Fla. man, enraged on having his open door hit by another driver's bumper on Hyde Park Avenue, resorted to fists of fury to try to resolve the situation:

The victim states he attempted to drive around the suspect's car, but, in attempting to do so, his front bumper struck the suspect's open car door. At this point, the victim tells police that the suspect punched his front window and, then, his passenger side rear window. The latter strike caused the window to shatter. When asked about punching the victim's windows, the suspect stated, "I punched his front window and it didn't break. So, I punched the back window."

Officers then treated the man to some northern hospitality at Area E-18.

Meanwhile, as if the Herald doesn't have enough problems already, police report an alleged Dotdrunk rear-ended one of its delivery trucks at Blue Hill Avenue and Fairway Street.

Band of thugs attack convenience stores in Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain

Boston Police could use some help in catching gunmen who held up convenience stores in Hyde Park and JP last week.

On June 18, around 2:20 p.m., police responded to a panic alarm at the River Street Mini-Mart, 991 River St., where employees were robbed at gunpoint by four black men wearing black shirts and black face masks - and carrying silver-colored handguns. One employee was ordered to lie on the floor while the other was ordered to open the cash register.

They got away with about $3,460 in cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes.

The next day, around 9 p.m., the J.P. Convenience Store, 162 South St. in JP, was held up by three black men, also in black masks and brandishing a silver-colored handgun and who also ordered the clerk to the floor. The thieves made off with about $2,000 in cash.

Based on the store's video system, one suspect is about 6' tall and about 165 lbs., another was 5'9", about 165 lbs. while the third was 5'9" and weighing in at 180 lbs.

Municipal bucrania

Bucrania are old Roman symbols depicting the garlanded skulls of oxen sacrificed during feasts. I've walked or driven past the the Municipal Building in Hyde Park for years, but I never noticed until yesterday that it has four of them up above the main entrance (you'll have to look way up to spot them).

Although some would argue they're a reference to a pre-Roman fertility goddess (look at their shapes for a moment), I'm betting the building's architect was simply looking for something classical to go with the columns at the front of the building - just like the architects of older office buildings downtown, who festooned their work with everything from caduceuses to depictions of Neptune to, yes, a bucranium or two.

The supermarket employees couldn't help but notice the bulge in his shorts

Boston Police report a Worcester man ordered some scallops and a chicken lobster at the deli department at the Hyde Park Avenue Shaw's yesterday, then put them in his shorts. Unfortunately for him, police say, store employees noticed his newly enlarged package as he tried to walk out of the store without paying and detained him until police arrived to put the pinch on him.

No word if the store put the seafood back or if police held it for evidence.

Because he was awfully calm after a woman hit him while he was riding his bike on River Street in Hyde Park last week:

He fell off his bike and suffered a small cut to his ankle, but told the flustered motorist to "just get going, and don't be late for work," Joyce said.
