Mystery trucks on Beacon Hill

Steve S. wonders what could possibly have been in the two Budget trucks that required a phalanx of Boston Police motorcycle cops to escort them as they turned onto Beacon from Charles a little after 11:30 last night.

Ed. Capt. Obvious note: Maybe they were just making sure they didn't get on Storrow Drive. Thank you, I'll be here all week.

The Globe needs to evaluate its policy on not naming people in stories

Today's Globe story on the Beacon Hill cleaning lady states:

Because no charges had been filed by last night, the Globe is withholding the woman's name.

Which is understandable. But the story then gives enough details about the woman's professional life that any bored Web surfer with 10 minutes to spare could quickly determine her name and even her social-security number.

The Globe really needs to come into the 21st century: Either don't provide enough gratuitous details about the woman's life to make looking her up easy or just print her name.

Yes, I posted her name yesterday (thanks to the Globe for mentioning she lived on the fourth floor, which led to the Boston online assessing records, which, since she is an owner-occupant, yielded her name and then the resulting Google search). Should I have?

Sorry, Globe: Dianne Wilkerson didn't qualify for the ballot with 3,000 signatures

The Globe reports on state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson's desire to avoid another embarrassment like two years ago, when she, oops, forgot to file her nomination petitions on time. The paper writes:

This year, Wilkerson qualified for the primary ballot with a whopping 3,000 signatures, 10 times the amount she needed.

Not quite. As Linda Rodriguez at the South End News reports, Wilkerson actually only qualified with 428 signatures, just one more than her opponent, Sonia Chang-Diaz. This doesn't mean the remainder of her 3,000 signatures were bad, necessarily, just that elections officials stopped looking after a certain point.

Don't hire Broadway Express as your moving company

They might just decide to smash their moving van into the Longfellow Bridge and spill your belongings all over Storrow Drive. And then charge your credit card before you can file a claim against them.

Earlier: An eyewitness account from someone standing on the bridge when it happened, and comments from Universal Hubsters. Also more photos at Flickr.
