He gives a failing grade to the sub/pizza shops of Cleveland Circle

And Eagle's is the worst of them all, new Cleveland Circle denizen Martin Lierbaman writes:

... Either the B.C. kids have really low standards for good food, or these places just aren't even trying. How I long for the days when I could get off the T on my way home and eat at T. Anthony's, a real pizza place, and a real good one at that.

Minor victories

With our neighborhoods increasingly overrun by bank branches, it must count as a minor victory that only half of the former CVS store abandoned when the pharmacy moved across the street is a bank.

The other half is a shiny new branch of the Chipotle chain. They were giving out free burritos at their official opening yesterday. When I rode by at about 6, the line was out-the-door and down to the corner by the Store24.

I'm torn about a big national chain spun off from McDonald's no less down the street from local folks BoLoCo (Boston Local Company). But, at least Chipotle sponsors a cycling team.

She continues to explore the empty, rolled up sidewalks of the Boston area

When last we left Susie, she was trying to navigate her way home from Quincy Market at 2 a.m. in the pouring rain. In today's episode, our heroine discovers that the last trolley leaves Cleveland Circle at 12:10 a.m., not 12:30 and that Beacon Street can be a most lonely place at that time on a Monday/Tuesday:

... You will continue standing like an idiot until a cop drives by you twice and then stops to ask what you're up to, probably figuring you're a hooker or selling some sort of illegal substance. He will then offer to go find a cab for you. When he returns, he will lecture you about not calling a cab before leaving your friends' house and not at all understand your reasoning behind it. ...

Will Safety First on the T Hurt You?

The number two item in the MBTA customer bill of rights reads: Your safety is our top priority. If we are not performing to your standards, please 'write to the top'. Top level management will respond. Given my interest in personal safety and experiences with the T, I had the opportunity to try this out.

To me, riding the T is usually painless, but getting on the "C" line "train" in Cleveland Circle can be hazardous to my health. Getting to the "T" platform in this area requires crossing Beacon Street near Reservoir Liquors or Maryann's Bar. Both locations have poorly maintained street lights and crosswalks that have faded into oblivion. For several months the green lights on the traffic light and the pedestrian walk lights were burned out leading drivers to believe they were out of service. The end result is that many drivers do not stop when the traffic lights turn red, leaving pedestrians to jump out of harms way when a driver barrels through. This problem is compounded by drivers who use the crosswalk area for parking and delivery liquor store delivery trucks who use it for unloading.
