The Brighton Marine Health Center says it's going to build 108 units of housing on its campus because helping veterans get a place to live is more important than assuaging the Secretary of State of the Commonwealth.

The Globe reports Secretary of State and Brighton resident Bill Galvin has managed to block construction of an apartment complex for veterans because it would mean demolishing some old buildings that neither the Boston Landmarks Commission nor the Brighton-Allston Historical Society say are important enough to save - especially since there are numerous clones of the buildings across the Northeast.

The BRA yesterday approved a proposed 101-apartment development on Commonwealth Avenue that would consist mostly of "affordable" units with just 20 rented at market rates.

The building would sit on land owned by the Brighton Marine Health Center at Warren Street.

Proposed veterans apartments in Brighton

Proposed Brighton Marine building.

The hill heading up Comm. Ave. from Warren Street could be transformed in coming years under plans by developers to add a new apartment building aimed at veterans and to turn an office building into a home for young single professionals.

Officials from the Brighton Marine Health Center showed off plans for a 101-unit project at the start of the hill, at Warren Street at a meeting of the Brighton Allston Improvement Associations last night.

The proposed project would house 81 "affordable" apartments and 20 rented at market rates, all with veterans given a preference.
