Wilkerson vs. Chang-Diaz: Round One

What one could call the opening round in the race between State Senator Dianne Wilkerson (D- 2nd Suffolk) and her Democratic challenger, Sonia Chang-Diaz, takes place tonight.

Boston Democratic Ward Committees are hosting a forum featuring the two candidates. After the forum, Boston's Ward 5 Democratic Committee is taking an endorsement vote. It might be only June, but this race has begun.

Here's an email I received regarding the event from the Boston Ward 5 Democratic Committee Chairman (NOTE: I am a member of the Boston Ward 5 Democratic Committtee):

To Committee Members and Friends:

Please note that the Boston Ward 5 Democratic Committee, along with other Boston Democratic Ward Committees, will be hosting a "Candidates Debate" between incumbent Dianne Wilkerson and her challenger Sonia Chang-Diaz, who are both vying to become the next Senator from the Massachusetts Second Suffolk District. The debate will take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, beginning at 7:00 pm at Emerson College's Bill Bordy Auditorium, 216 Tremont Street, in Boston, between LaGrange Street and Stuarts Street, directly across from the historic Cutler Majestic Theater (one block from the Boylston Green Line T stop).

The debate will be on the issues that are of most interest to residents of the Second Suffolk District, and may include such issues as affordable housing, economic opportunity, health care, education and the environment. After the debate concludes, the Boston Ward 5 Democratic Committee will conduct its regular meeting, and will consider whether to endorse either of the two candidates for State Senator from the Second Suffolk District. It should be a great event!

The Ward 5 Democratic Committee, by roll-call vote, endorsed Senator Wilkerson at the meeting tonight. She won the 2/3 majority necessary to earn the endorsement by two votes.

You don't like her much.

Just for my edification, could you tell me why? Has she done a bad job? Or is it about the late taxes thing?

about her. She votes the way I would like her to almost everytime, but her staff are rude and stupid when you call her office and don't ever know what you're talking about. I find it disconcerting that she is such a mess in her personal life and that her office reflects that disorganization and lack of interest in her job and her constituents. I cannot believe that she has not crashed and burned yet, and don't really want her to be my senator when that inevitably happens. That's why I won't vote for her again.
