OK, technically, the new screen at the Loews Boston Common is an IMAX, but as Jon Chesto reports, it's kind of puny compared to the ones at the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium.

I cannot imagine the amount of self-deception involved in owning a brand like IMAX and thinking you won't destroy it by diluting it. Soon you'll be able to license IMAX-branded clock radios, right next to the GE and RCA models.

I hope nobody hears wastes a penny at that screen. If you're willing to pay $17 for a ticket, then go to Jordan's for the real IMAX experience. Shame on the IMAX company for continuing to hide which screens are real IMAX and which aren't.

I don't think any bus route or train station is near either the [s]Reading or[/s] Natick screens.
Edit: I'm wrong, you can take the Haverhill commuter rail (and walk 15+ minutes) or bus 137 to Reading. But neither of these services are very frequent in the evening or on weekends. If you take the commuter rail, you're adding a $9.50 round trip per person to the cost of your movie.
As for the Natick Imax, that's not a reasonable place to reach by train unless you bring a bicycle along. There is a Metro-West bus system but it does not run much on Saturdays or at all on Sundays or weeknights.
Also, the Natick/Framingham buses don't go up the hill

So it'd be a bit of a hike up Capt. Tom's Hill to get to the theater.

It doesn't matter who can and can't get to the Jordan IMAX screens.
The problem is that they bill these new medium-sized movie experiences as "IMAX" when they're not. If the consumer wants a *true* IMAX experience they need to find a way to get to one of the real IMAX screens. If they can't, then they shouldn't be told that what they're getting downtown is an "IMAX" experience on par with the ones at Jordan's. If it's not easy for someone to get to the other places has nothing to do with the problem caused by calling this one downtown an "IMAX".
For example, I also wouldn't want someone telling me they were giving me "7.1 surround sound audio" by piping left-right stereo through 3 left and 3 right speakers with a center combined mono channel and a high-crossover subwoofer. ("hey, it was audio..and we surrounded you with speakers, right?")
Whether the area is well served by the limited IMAX options (everywhere is pretty much exactly like that when it comes to IMAX) is not related to whether Boston Common 19 should be bragging it has "IMAX" inside.

When husband gets tix for an evening show, I will take the commuter rail out to meet them. It is about a 10-15 minute walk. I wouldn't bother biking it - the last half of the journey is straight up hill!

Growing up with bi-yearly trips to the MOSI has made any other kind of IMAX screen a total letdown.

I think I read somewhere that one of the larger auditoriums in the Regal Fenway 13 would be receiving the pseudo-IMAX treatment. Any corroboration?

Well there's an undefined icon hovering over Park Drive on the Find an IMAX display. Is that confirmation enough? At least it jibes with the rumor.

Change the location to 02144 and you'll see that the "undefined icon" moves to Davis Square.

There aren't going to be any new Real IMAX Theaters anytime soon. Boston, and it's metro area, are lucky to have as many as it does. Some major cities have none.
Here is a breakdown of the difference.
I bet the IMAX folks are kicking themselves for not building new theaters with the way Avatar catapulted 3D into the money machine it is right now.
