Stories like this make me appreciate how fortunate I am to walk my 3-year old down to a bus stop, ride along in a cramped, steamy, packed bus that slowly lurches up the street in a mile-long line of traffic, transfer to a subway that is inexplicably delayed for 10-15 minutes or more, walk uphill to a preschool that costs about a month's rent, and then deal with separation tantrums and eventually stroll into work a little late without anybody docking me an hour's pay. We've got to figure out a way to protect these babies. There must be a way to certify the vans, put license/labels on them, require training and procedures and do everything reasonable to make this "system" safe. Of course, that would add to the cost...which people can't afford...but there has got to be a way to fund this at least partially or through some kind of community-based program. I'm sure the driver wishes he had been the one in that van, but guilt, niceness, and best intentions doesn't do crap for the family.

In case you weren't aware, the Globe is now behind a paywall. Please stop linking to them as they're now a lost cause.
Yep, am aware

Even wrote about it yesterday. They claim that links from blogs will bypass the paywall for the specific article you're linking to, so, theoretically, at any rate, you should still be able to see what I link to. Did you hit the paywall with their story, though?

I hit the paywall. I'd abandon the Globe, if I were you. It's going to destroy your users' experience with your site.
I hit the wall too, sorry.

I hit the wall but then I clicked on Boston.com and could go right onto the Homepage where the article was front and center.

And the Globe's unnecessarily arrogant attitude in reporting it sure doesn't help. Specifically:
Seems to me that "No comment from the day-care center" would have been sufficient.
I see nothing wrong....

or other information that added any value to the story. Especially as they quoted BPD Media Relations elsewhere in the story.
Furnter, such a quote only serves to portray the person who answered the phone as uncooperative, and the reporter as unnecessarly harassing the day care center for not givving them any information.
Given the circumstances of the story, this meets my definition of arrogance.

Well, its a comment, but it might have been just as good to paraphrase instead of quoting, e.g. "a reporter who called another number listed on the center's sign was referred to the Boston Police Department."
too much

I do not want to detract from the sorrow of this family or the attention that should be placed on this incident.
However, reading the violations found in the newly recertified daycare center was also very frustrating. It's not just the vans, the cost, the safety, etc. It's the impossible decision parents face trying to raise thriving children.
Boston does a lot of good things to support its citizens, but there is still so much to do for the youngest ones and those who care for them every day.
