DA: Man arrested after challenging Occupy Boston to a fight
By adamg on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 1:10pm
Two people are due for arraignment today on charges they proved less than desirable residents of the Dewey Square tent city, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Matthew Douglas, 40, is charged with disorderly conduct for "allegedly challenging multiple members of the protest to fight him after being kicked out of the encampment," the DA's office reports.
Martina Martin, 41, faces arraignment on a charge of distribution of a Class C drug after she was allegedly observed selling prescription sedatives, the DA's office says, adding the two cases have nothing to do with each other.
Innocent, etc.

I feel bad for the encampment
I feel bad for the encampment having to deal with obstacles like this, the Herald constantly trying to undermine them, and the cold weather coming up. I know I, as well as many others in office, are rooting for them!
I apreciate your support
It would make it even better if you identified yourself as a supporter of Occupy's First Amendment rights, if not acknowledge the specific complaints you agree with.
Not one legislator came out of the Capitol to listen to the speeches today.
Our government, which is badly broken and is under the control of money not voters, would rather dismiss our movement as representing the kind of people you find easily dismissed usually by smearing us as antisemitic, or hippies or jobless or communist or whatever. We are parents with families who live n the city and in the suburbs. We do not agree on all issues but we agree on the big ones, that government is broken becuase it is in the hands of the wealthy and that banks and corporations have business models that profit by screwing taxpayer/customers. We bailed them out, they spent our taxes dollars on bonuses.
Why would you 'feel bad' for
Why would you 'feel bad' for the encampment? Most of these people CHOOSE to live in tents in the middle of a beautiful city in a lovely park. I'm sure they don't want your misplaced pity.
What?
Your "support" as an elected official means jack if you won't even use your name. Do you have any idea how much it would mean for you to come out publicly for the Occupiers? Grow a pair and show some actual support for the people who put you in office, but don't flatter yourself that your silent approval is of any use whatsoever.
No Alcohol Or Drugs
is posted on a big sign at the Dewey Square entrance to Occupy (or was, the last time I biked by there)
still not sure...
what right occupyboston has to kick people out of a PUBLIC park. if they have drugs/alcohol, they can alert police and let them handle it, but otherwise, anyone has a right to be there.
Huh?
Did I miss something? They did exactly what you're trolling / complaing about.
Up is down?
I spent Sat moring at the park near Dewey Sq
where Occupy Boston had been evicted by force Columbus Day. Not one person used the park all morning, not one, not even to walk through.
The right question is this question:
Yup
They're doing to a good job of policing themselves for a rag tag group of normal people.
Guess since a kid isn't involved, and OWS most likely pointed the troublemakers out to police, it's not new worthy.
Yes we have no bananas
Doesn't that just mean that they're currently fresh out of drugs and alcohol, so don't ask?...
Rather strange headline given the story
From the headline, I fully expected that one of the dreaded 1%, or at least a member of the 99% who hadn't chosen to camp at Obamaville, was the person arrested. I should have known, but didn't expect from the headline, that they were merely fighting amongst themselves. Anon 2:02 pm raises a great point. Too bad Mr. Douglas didn't remain peaceful while refusing to leave. It's already hilarious but would be even funnier if the "General Assembly" tried to evict him considering they have no legal standing at the site. Ha!
Sad an "ex cop"
Doesn't understand that repeatedly threatening assault on someone is a crime. They tagged him with a DC, but you don't need battery to be charged with assault.
Then again, overlooking that tends to happen when you're looking through ideologically tinted glasses.
I haven't seen any OWS (besides the opportunistic La Rouches) threatening assault. Unlike these guys:
Disorderly arrest of man at his home? "Police acted 'stupidly"
@anon 3:03 pm. No need to be sad, as the arrest was perfectly legal, much like the arrest of Professor Skippy Gates at his home in Cambridge a while back. In fact, since this defendant was also arrested for Disorderly at his "home" in Dewey Square, I'm sure it's just a matter of time befoe President Obama weighs in. This case raises another interesting question. When these people assault each other, is it domestic violence since all 100 are residing together?
My original point though was that the headline failed to summarize the story, which it's supposed to do. The current headline fails to establish the disorder is all internal and that both suspect and victim(s) were Occupiers. 'Tis all.
Sorry, FISH, you're stretching again.
I fail to see the relevance of mentioning Skip Gates in your latest screed,as I don't see any of the Occupy protesters who have been arrested getting their own TV shows on PBS out of the notoriety.
Also, the woman arrested was not a protester, she's just another one of the professional grifters that work South Station and who has now set up camp in Dewey Square.
Gated Community
When did the land of Occupy Boston become a gated community where they can evict people from the camp for not following the rules of the condo association?
Rules of the condo association?
No alcohol or drugs in a public park isn't a condo association rule. It's the law.
what about camping?
what about camping?
