Jewelry key to identifying drowned woman?

UPDATE: Authorities make ID.

Ring

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office has released photos of jewelery removed from the body of a woman found in the Charles River yesterday after she jumped off the Harvard Bridge. Officials say she had no identification with her and are hoping somebody recognizes the ring and pendant. If you do, contact Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817. She's described as a young black woman, about 5'4" and 110 lbs, with hair shaved on the sides and a longer tuft of hair at the top front.

If she had well kept or professionally done nails, someone who did her nails might recognize this ring.

Newbury College in Brookline grants associate's degrees, though I don't know if they granted an "A.S." degree in the 1980s. (It used to have a lot of satellite campuses.)

If the woman was a 1987 graduate of Newbury College that would make her maybe 44, which could look "young." (Alternatively, it could be her mother's ring.)

The stone could be an amethyst birthstone, indicating a February birth month.

"MJ" = initials.

I would presume that the State Police have run all this down, but perhaps not.

I would also check with nearby hotels and restaurants. Newbury has a pretty decent Associates in Applied Science for restaurant, hotel management and culinary arts. It was probably around in 1987.

I figured it referenced Newbury College too but I assumed that the AS meant "Arts and Sciences", a common division of colleges.

That division is called "Arts Science and Design" at Newbury now. I don't know what it would have been called then. In either event it would make sense to check with the registrar.

You may be right. Here are the current Newbury College class rings.

Unfortunately your bit.ly link goes to a session-timeout page. Let's try again: Newbury College class rings

Looks similar to the "small seascape" rings shown on page 2. Could be a discontinued version of that design.

Presuming that it's Newbury College it should be relatively easy for someone to track down a yearbook or similar for 1987 and track down black women with the initials MJ. Of course the report describes her as "young" whereas the ring would put her in her mid forties. Could be someone who looks younger than her age or the ring could have belonged to the dead woman's mother or other older female relative. But even if we discard "black" as a descriptor there can't be that many women with the initials MJ graduating from Newbury in 1987

I'm sorry that you think you know this person. That's hard.

Even if it is a hunch, please search through the users for Jake Ward and let him know, or contact the above numbers. Even if you are wrong, at least you will have provided some important information.
