A 30-year veteran MBTA driver crashed a #80 bus into a stopped car in Somerville Friday evening, [url=http://bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/2011012... the Herald[/url]. The bus wasn't the only thing wrecked that day:
John McCarthy, 61, of Somerville was arrested Friday night and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and an open-container violation.
McCarthy could not stand up straight, had trouble speaking and reeked of booze, Transit Police said.“I escorted Mr. McCarthy out of the driver’s seat and as he got out of the seat he started to stumble and had trouble maintaining his balance,” an officer wrote in the police report. “McCarthy’s speech was distinctly slurred and he could not answer my questions until I repeated the question multiple times.”
...
Police found an open bottle of Ruble Vodka in McCarthy’s left jacket pocket.

There's a guy who has been driving the 80 for a long long time who has a really bad attitude and drives like a total psycho. So bad that there are people that step back when they see him coming and wait for the next bus.
Makes me wonder ...

Certainly looks like him, although hard to tell without a sense of height/weight. These guys all look alike ;-)

Give the "T" POLICE some credit. I'm sure there was some pressure to get the broom out on this one.

It's amazing to see he made 80 grand a year.
Distinctly slurred?

Maybe it would have been better if the transit police officer had written "slurred and indistinct" rather than "distinctly slurred."

Distinctly slurred, as in "it was very f'n obvious that he was slurring his speech". Distinct from "speaking clearly".
Once again!

I remember once when I was driving with two young sons when an MBTA bus would have plowed into me on Centre in WR. it passed over the double yellow and cut me off so tightly that only my quick reflexes kept us from being wiped out. The bus was swerving all over both lanes. It seemed obvious the driver was seriously impaired with alcohol or some other drug.
I pulled over by a BPD cop working a detail right there. I asked if he'd call the bus in and have him stopped. The cop started scolding me, saying that particularly with kids in the car, it was my job to avoid drivers of vehicles bigger than my car. The bus was bigger, so I needed to do what was necessary to avoid it. Apparently a drunk driving a bus was not an issue.
Bigger wins? Nice attitude.

Remember, construction details get cops on the street so they can keep an eye on things.
