The Phoenix tries to make sense of the impending Brighton Music Hall in Allston. Also, it'll have a new sound system. Folks who pine for the sound of the old Harpers Ferry should make their way to TT the Bear's.

Is that a dig at TT's sound system?

I've always thought they had a great sound guy, bands rarely seem to have any issues after the first song or so.
Not a dig.

No, it is actually quite literal. The old sound system from Harper's Ferry was bought by TT's.

Never having been to TT's, I'm in no position to judge their sound system. I was just noting how they bought Harpers' old system, according to the Phoenix.
Ah, I see

Sorry for the suspicion.

The last time I was there, at Jon Bernhardt's Breakfast of Champions anniversary show, I was saying to my wife, "Geez, when was the last time we came to a show at TT's? I wonder why so few of the bands we like book shows here anymore." And then Sleepyhead came on stage and kicked into their first song and I remembered "Oh, right. Because this room fucking sucks."
Nothing against the sound guy himself, who is doing the best with what he has, but the acoustics there are just dire.
Never really noticed it

I notice muddy sound or poorly miked stuff more than bad accoustics -- if I'm watching a show in a bar, I take those as a given.
It's the room setup, I think

The sound just bounces right off that wall facing the stage that the sound guy is behind. It's not that bad if you're seeing a band that tends toward the delicate--acoustic-oriented groups or solo acts sound fine there, and the High Llamas sounded great there a few years ago when they were last in town--but anytime a band cranks up, it just gets really piercing. I usually end up on the other side of the main bar: you can't see the band, but at least I don't get a headache.
I've had enough of dance halls
