Reporter tags along with cabbie for story; cabbie writes his version first

The Hack reports on the WBUR reporter who rode with him one night for a story about Boston cab drivers:

All this chatting distracted me. I found myself driving aimlessly. Other cabs had cut in front of me to pick up fares I should have stopped for. I was getting frustrated.

"What about the airport?" Adam asked. "You must get a lot of good fares from there."

Actually, I hardly ever go to the airport, other than to drop off fares from the city. The taxi pool at Logan is a black hole, a place where hundreds of cabs cram themselves into a parking lot and become trapped for hours on end. By the time you get out of there you're likely only to get some passenger going to a downtown hotels. It's not worth it.

I am a complete public radio addict, but it's undeniable - the quality of WBUR's reporting staff has been slipping for a while now. It seems like they keep getting younger, less connected to the local culture, and less common-sensical. Sometimes its hard to believe that any of them have ever wandered off the BU campus before.

You'd think that given that WGBH has been expanding its game in radio news and commentary, WBUR would try to up its game as well. But the opposite seems to have happened. Even _Radio Boston_, which started off so strong and still can deliver great episodes, is making me cringe more and more often - and if I feel like rolling my eyes and groaning at the radio I can just listen to Emily Rooney.

When I fly into Logan, I usually take a cab out, and always the same hassle. You spend 15 minutes waiting in line for the cabby who is ALSO spending 15 minutes waiting in line, when the airport could easily give the cab stop more space so we can find each other right away and GTFO of there.

. . . is a snap- just hop the blue line at Aquarium station- 5 minute T ride to "Airport"- shuttle bus to whatever terminal I depart from (usually C). And when I come into Logan- same deal- shuttle to blue line stop- and I'm home. Sometimes take the water shuttle in warmer months to the Harbor Hotel. Never take a taxi.

because in a move of staggering stupidity, Massport has moved the limo holding area almost entirely off of the airport grounds. Whereas before it was easy for us to check in and go to the terminal, now between the hours of 4-7PM ,we have to wait in the line of cars that are trying to exit the airport through the cargo exit to get to the limo pool, which means a longer wait at the terminal for our passengers, who pay a lot more for our service than those who take cabs.

Massport is without a doubt the worst run organization I've ever had the displeasure of working with. Add to that the Herald publishing the salaries of this collection of humps, and the disgust only grows deeper and deeper.

What did they do with the former limo pool?

Are limos allowed to park in the regular short-term garages?

where the old pool was into a central rent a car terminal like they have in Vegas. And no, thanks to all of the gypsies working the airport, livery vehicles are no longer allowed in the parking garages. Massport was tired of getting beat out of their 3.25.

Believe it or not, the new pool is directly behind Wood Island Station and is less than half the size of the old pool.
