A Subway sub shop will be opening up in Roslindale Square's first new building in forever, on Washington Street. Further south, Panda Express is replacing a shuttered wine shop between the Stop & Shop and Five Guys; good news for people getting bored with the IHOP and Chipotle.

Why the (perceived) knock on Five Guys?

One good thing about Subway-
You can get a fairly healthy sandwich w/o a million questions or a whole rigmarole.
Calorie and nutrition info, etc.
Better than a lot of the mom and pop's in that regard.
Good for when I'm on the go and need a quick bite.
(I'd probably get a burrito at Romano's, btw)
Yep, you pretty much know

Yep, you pretty much know exactly what you're going to get with a chain fast food joints. That's why they're boring. I'll take mom & pop, thanks.

Consistency and nutritional info count for something.
I' m frequently eating in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
For every nice mom and pop find with good food and proprietors there is a shithole with lousy food and attitudes.
I can order a decent veggie sandwich at Subway w/o explaining my order or myself to the owner and I can see them making it right.
Romanos and their I'll haven't cornered the market on fresh veggies.
If only every community...

could be like an airport food court. You know exactly what you're getting and there aren't any nasty surprises like flavor, originality or creativity. Bring on the wax-coated cold cuts and faux-flatbread!
Subway Stinks....Sorry.

The are stingy on the meat and high on price for what you get. The one and only time I ate at a Subway was when I ordered a small sub (turkey, I believe) which came with so much lettuce, I could not find the meat.

I'm not a fan of Subway, either, but chains like that do serve a purpose. If you have allergies, or are on a strict diet for medical or other reasons, you can order a turkey sub on whole wheat at a chain like Subway and know exactly what you're going to get.

Something that looks like turkey on a roll that looks like whole wheat.
Please, this is a chain that offers "turkey ham" as a menu item.
