A Southie local eh? Here's his Facebook page

Not quite the shade of skin most of the Southie locals were hoping for on this one. The real culprits behind the rise in Southie's crime are begining to be revealed. RIP Barbara, hopefully this scumbag will rot in jail, and the rest of his family will GTFO.

You couldn't be more wrong.

This was local junkie from the hop.

Good bid, though.

Oh really? That's odd, since all of his friends on Facebook are from Southie and he lives on E.3rd. Nice try though bro. How about you talk to some people, see if you can get the scumbag kids of Southie to stop killing and assaulting citizens on the streets.

Southie Pride right?

Hey Anon: This is the exception, not the rule! Most people from Southie are good People. As for you, my prayers are with you. You seem very angry about something. I'm sure South Boston has nothing to do with it.

you couldn't be more wrong about what were residents hoping for re: color of suspect.

Keep working out your SB issues though.

South Boston like other cities across this country has a long history of drugs. But now a days the drug of choice
is heroine among others. There is no easy fix for this. All the school education has done little to halt the spread
of this. A fine person lost her life and no words can properly speak to the sadness friends and family feel.

God bless Her and family our prayers are with you........

Hey Anon...The good People of South Boston were not concerned with the "color" of the suspect more than making an arrest as soon as possible. You seem to have an old fashioned way of thinking about South Boston. I happen to know the Family of both the Victim and the Man arrested. However, it is not unusual for an "outsider" to use a tragic incident as this to spew his/her vitriolic hatred towards a great Community of Law Abiding, Hard Working, Middle Class People. I hope you seek some sort of Counseling for your apparent short comings! God Bless You.

Oh OK; when it's an article about home prices or new developments, it's perfectly OK for Southie locals to get on here and "to spew his/her vitriolic hatred" about other residents or homeowners in the neighborhood, right?

But when one of your own murders a grandmother, it's "God Bless you". Got it. Since you seem to know so many families in the area, maybe you could persuade them to talk thier kids into not killing people? Or even just stop beating people into comas for no reason? FYI, law abiding, hard working people usually don't hooked on crank.

You've been watching too much Boondock's or something.

Southie is a pretty vanilla neighborhood now a days, and while some local bark is loud, there's no bite left, except for a few misguided boneheads.

Allston's had more murders in the past 5 years than Southie. And most of the new and long time locals are decent folk.

Your comments are valid, I may be overreacting. But, I live in this neighborhood and we (everyone) has had to contend with a lot of random crime in the last two years from the same group of 18-28 white males, who happen to be from the neighborhood and I am f@cking tired of it. These are middle class kids trying to gangsters, and I think they get somewhat of a pass being "born and raised in Southie" when they show up their arraignments next to kids from Roxbury.

And then, the anti-yuppy contingent has the nerve to jump online and say the "yuppies" are ruining Southie. I sweep my street, help my neighbors with trash cans and groceries. So yes I am angry, and it has everything to South Boston.

The Yuppies and Realtors would like everyone to believe that they have changed Southie for the better. Instead of criticizing and whining why don't they be more philanthropic and donate some time and money to the nonprofits, churches etc in the community?

The long time locals, the mayor, politicians and work from the police and feds have changed Southie for the better. There's three housing projects in Southie, and little to no crime from them (comparatively). It about as safe to walk around at night as the South End and Back Bay.

Still has issues, but it's a city and what city does not?

And a lot of the "issues" are just teen thugs buying into the nostalgic stories that people like everyone above keep feeding them. Wigger syndrome isn't something new to Southie, nor confined to it's borders. Has anyone missed Jersey Shore? Same bullshit, different historical cultural frame. Either way, they'll grow out of it, or eventually pick on the wrong person somewhere.

"Wigger syndrome?" Are you kidding me? Because let me translate--and please step in to correct me if I'm wrong--these are just nice white Southie kids who feel compelled to...act like, er....black people? The "real" Southie has no crime, no problems--it's just that occasionally kids get to feeling a little, y'know...wiggerish?

Seriously--my head is still spinning. Thanks for throwing around a term I haven't heard since high school, but I don't think anyone buys that line anymore. Maybe it worked back when the Bulgers were in charge--yup, sure, everything's just fine and dandy here in Southie, as long as we can keep the jigaboos out. Jeeze Louise.

isn't black or white. That wasn't a commentary on race at all, but on attitudes and actions of a small group.

Take it as you will, but it's the term that best describes the poor and middle class white praise of cutthroat and ruthlessly violent life of bad black neighborhoods of the 80's and 90's. They see it as something good, powerful, and useful in defining themselves; rather than shameful and unfortunate.

Gang culture praise is not a good thing. Everyone else is welcomed with open arms as far as I'm concerned.

You don't think someone using the term "wigger" is making a comment on race?

hey man i am a long time southie native and i have lived the life of drugs and crime, thankfully i was fortunate to get out ans join the marine corps before i got into a situation like this but the only problem is the massachusetts gun laws so take up your beef with the congressman because i hear of a new story everyday of break ins where the homeowner shoots the intruder n kills them and goes to sleep the same way they did the night before thats how life is down in the south and for u to down people who are trapped in that town, who the fuck are you, i bet you aint never done nuin with your life, the marine corps saved mine but there are kids that cant be saved because of how bad the economy is now so why dont u take your fight up with the politicians because down south they dont break into to houses because of the fear that the homeowner owns a gun!

Brother please do not apologize here . You are 100%
Correct . All of your post are. The old regime of southie
Neve want to take ownership for the issues of southie
It is always someone else who made it this way. Southie kids do
Drugs but not their fault. It is the drug dealers from out side
Southie that push and force the drugs on them ..and because the
Yuppies force them to not have a job and force thur
Familie to sell there homes they have no where to live .

Take ownership and we a a community can fix it

up

Seriously? Southie has a drug problem only because outsiders forced Southie kids to do drugs?

Yes, absolutely everything bad that happens in South Boston is due to evil outsiders, thanks for making that so clear!

It wasn't my post, but I understood exactly what the author was getting at:

"The old regime of southie
Neve want to take ownership for the issues of southie
It is always someone else who made it this way."

Lemme ask... how much "eye contact" do you make with guys who come into Murphy's that you don't know? I mean real eye contact and not mean muggin over your spot on the stool.

It ain't like the folks around here are exactly tipping caps and saying hello to everyone who walks by. You're lucky if you're not catchin someone mid-loogie or mid-puff outside Shenanigans, nevermind looking them in they eye.

What's the matter? Chick with they yoga mat didn't smile when you said hey? Wouldn't come into your bar with no sign on it? Stunna.

Hey ChrisB

I am sure you aren't talking about me and my
comments about locals always looking to blame
elsewhere??? Are you?

I get in arguments all the time with "locals"..I have
never once backed down. I have been doing it for 12
years now. I say hi to everyone yuppy or local
always make eye contact. Attend all political events..
email and talk with politicians.. I know all store owners by
name...I mentored. Help developers. I read the local papers
without fail every Thursday. I own property.. I am
a fixture here and won't be leaving .. So I am more of
a south Boston resisdent than you coul hope to be

If you ever want to meet let's do it ??? Coffee? I am for real are you! ? Don't hide
behind a screen

That statements indicative of the whole "local" attitude; for some reason you think we should greet you on the streets out of 'respect' or something.

If we can go six months without a local kid either stabbing, robbing or jumping an innocent citizen I'll say hello to every local I see for one month. Deal?

I had written before as Anon Chris B ...asked for you to meet...Cofee maybe stare at each other eye to eye???

Thoughts go out to the family. Hope they can forgive, but wouldn't blame them if they didn't. Tell us again how the yuppies are ruining the place, Timmy.

I'd be very surprised if this was 100% random. Especially since they found a suspect so fast.

Authorities said today that Barbara Coyne, 67, was murdered inside her South Boston home by a man intent on robbing her of valuable fishing gear.

The Globe.

I know we no longer have capital punishment in the Commonwealth, but if ever there was a douchebag who deserved it, its this winner.

up
Voting closed 0

...just let this winner hock some high end electronics and I'm sure we'll find him blue-faced and cold in the bathroom stall of a McDonald's somewhere. I won't shed any tears for this shithead but no doubt his story will also fall in the realm of tragedy - which is sad for his family as well. A pathetically sad story all around. Condolences to all the lives shattered by this situation.

P3G

I will meet up with you . I will let you name the time and place and I will do my best to accomadate.

But lets be clear with what I am saying as I type fast and post faster.

I am a resident of South Boston. I am a person that is vested in the community . I am a person who will stay and raise a family here . I am not "from" here . I do not claim to be from "here" . I do claim to be a bigger part of the community than almost the entire "yuppy" community and more than most of the "lifer" community.

Most of the friendships that I value now in my adult years are with life long South Boston residents . So I am not by anyway a "yuppy" that bashes the life long community .

What I am is someone that is sick and tired of listening to a small portion of the the life long resisdents that complain over and over that whatever the issue may be it is because of the "yuppies" ...that yuppies dont get what it is like to be blue collar or to know your neighbor or earn a hard living etc...etc...

What I also am is someone is sick of the "renter" community that doesnt care about the community . The ones that dont get involved but just complain over and over about the locals ...that makes fun of locals saying they are toothless and dumb and rasict ...but NEVER take one moment to talk to a neighbor or to get to know a "local" ....etc...etc...

What I want is to get rid of both those communities so that those that are PROUD to call Southie their home can help make it shine !!! Whether they were born here or decided to move here as long as they get involved own property and take care of where WE live they are the real "residents" of Southie.

The yuppie vs locals is stupid , worn out and needs to stop...I am SICK of it.

To my comments, I do want the so called "local" community to take ownership here . I want them to finally say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. For over a year now there have been several hate crimes toward yuppies and NO ONE from the "local" community has voiced that what is happening is WRONG !!! Not a politician , no one who writes for the local papers, no "pillars" of OUR community have done a thing. Sadly , this poor woman may had to have been killed for "locals" to step up and want to stop this group of tennagers (16) - 20 somethings. This group that just HATES yuppies and thinks the Southie gangstar lifestyle is cool ~!...news flash it has been dead since the late 80's !

I agree crime happens everywhere and I fight all the time with family and friends that Southie is safer than where they live. I personally am never afraid to walk the streets. I use common sense . I lock my doors and windows. I dont walk at 2AM nor run castle island at 11PM. Common sense.

I dont want these things glorified in the news by the media that still gives Southie that stereotype...but I do want the COMMUNITY to step up. To NOT blame yuppies for pushing famlies out and causing these kids to have a tough life. I dont want to hear that they are good kids but other commnities force drugs down their throats...etc...

I hope you get my point.

Let me know ...

Also it bothers me that once again the local papers
And sites do not cover this at all but they complain that
The globe herald and world is against Southie

A local gets murdered by a local and the conversation goes to "yuppies" and "outsiders"...only in Southie.

I feel like, on this site, the topic usually changes to some argument that's only partly about the main topic. Usually revolving around race of whatever kind, politics, or class. Then again, so do most message boards haha. Love this site though.
