Even worse than Segways
A flood of complaints poured in late this afternoon from downtown, the Back Bay and Beacon Hill, where a large contingent of people on dirt bikes, motorcycles and ATVs briefly took over the streets.
At 5:26, Gabe tweeted:
A legit gang of a couple dozen 4wheelers and dirtbikes just ran the red light at Washington & Essex street...confused.
At 5:47, Caitlin tweeted:
What's up with the gang of dirt bikes, ATV's and motorcycles on Newbury St? Weaving in and out of cars with no helmets?
Bill Ilott reports counting 30 riders tonight and says this is the third Sunday in a row for the activity.
Helmetless dirt-bike and ATV riders have long been the scourge of streets such as Blue Hill Avenue.

There were a couple hundred bikers in clusters out on the Fellsway in Medford yesterday, and I was wondering if there was some sort of charity ride going on.
Wounded Warriors Ride
About 2,000 motorbikes - went from Everett through Medford, Melrose, Stoneham, etc.
(No subject)
up by franklin park, too
...where a bunch of them tore through the grassy fields and then disappeared up on the hill.
20 min later, we saw smoke billowing from the area, rushed up to find they'd left the remains of their dinner (plantains and pork) and then decided to set a fire. We managed to put it out.
First it was the trolly egging innocent people on the streets, now it's these assholes tearing through the city on mini dirtbikes...setting fires and littering.
Why is it that our city is apparently protected by a bunch of keystone kops?
We now return to our regularly scheduled program...
What have you done for me lately?
So, it's been nine days and now Boston Police are Keystone Cops?
Where's that White Party Trolley?
Get the drunken egg throwers to take a tour where and when the four wheelers and dirt bikes are out.
Could get interesting.
These kids ride around Roxbury all the time.
The cops tell me they can't/won't chase them.
I would love to know some way of dealing with this. It will just get worse as the weather gets better.
batter up
See if they're interested in a friendly game of neighborhood stickball?
Ear splitting motorcyclists' cycles outside folks' homes?
What can be done about the ear splitting motorcyclists' cycles outside folks' homes?
So, this happened today...
This gang definitely rode through MLK/Humboldt ave several times this afternoon. Insanely loud, and with cops chasing, one of the cop cars actually tried to run down one of the bikers. Had a good laugh at that, I did. This happens every single day around here when it's warm, and it's incredibly annoying, given that it can wake you from your sleep at 3am.
Just a bunch of obnoxious dickheads who are starving for attention by revving engines loudly. Too bad about that "reading" fad, eh?
Is today some sort of
Is today some sort of National Dirtbike Day Out that we're all unaware of? I'm down in Brooklyn and a large group of (unregistered) dirt bikes and ATVs zoomed by on Eastern Parkway (a street that's similar the Arborway or Jamaicaway.) Some of them did wheelies (admittedly, cool) one almost tipped over (not so cool.) This was about 6pm. I've never seen that before.
This has quite popular trend
This has quite popular trend in the Baltimore-philadelhia corridor for several years now. I always hoped this trend would just go away, but instead it is getting bigger and coming to Boston

Flashback 2011: "Menino seeks to ban motorized dirtbikes"
June 2011: Menino seeks to ban motorized dirtbikes. How's that working out? One City!
Saw and heard them on Boylston St going towards Chinatown
mid-late afternoon. Starting to see them all the time when the weather starts to get nice. B.B. is becoming a sea of motorcycles revving engines, these obnoxious dirtbikes, and aholes blasting their shitty noise from car stereos.
BTW: Don't know what events were going on yesterday in Beacon Hill/Back Bay area, but as I left work and walked down Charles St through the common there were a particularly large number of tourist-type people behaving like dbags. I think unfortunately, Boston is going to be invaded by people who want to see where the bombs went off.
Yes. Yesterday I was shocked
Yes. Yesterday I was shocked to overhear a woman excitedly tell her small child, "We're going to the marathon site, where everything happened!" As if seeing where a little boy died is a tourist attraction? Plus, how do you explain that to your kids?
Saw one of these guys hit a parked car once.
If I remember correctly, I heard "buzzzzzzz, buzzzzzz." then saw the dirt bike. The buzzing engine got a little quieter, then I heard, "WHAM!" as the dirt bike hit the car. The operator fell down and ended up behind the rear of the car. They got up, shook their head, pulled the dirt bike out, then took off riding again.
If hitting a parked car didn't stop this one, I'm not sure much else will.
I got one!
piano wire.
That's gotta hurt!
.
actually
it kills. please don't try this at home. or anywhere else.
it's been used against snowmobilers -- sometimes just a chain or some type of cord at neck-height -- with horrific results. It would be nice to see the authorities do something before someone gets the dark idea to try this in the n'hood.

Segways are still worse
Segways are still worse because they drive on the sidewalks.
I don't know about that
I don't know about that... these assholes are the reason I look both ways when I cross my (one-way, very narrow) street now. I had headphones on one day last summer and only checked the direction traffic is supposed to come from, and almost got mowed down by two of these idiots screaming up the hill the wrong way. Segways are at least guaranteed not to be going more than about 10 MPH when they run you down.
What, like bicyclists?
Segways are worse because they are on sidewalks like bicycles?
The problem is making sidewalks as wide as travel lanes or shared bike/pedestrian paths. Its an open invitation to ride on. Either narrow sidewalks to make room for bike lanes on the street, or make part of the sidewalk just for bikes and Segways. Don't waste transportation tax dollars to make outdoor seating for private businesses - let them pay for windows that open up fully.
you know the drill...
...here we go.
In Uphams Corner on Sunday
A group of the ATV'ers were on Columbia Rd at Uphams Corner on Sunday. They cut off the bus I was on weaving right in front of us forcing the driver to jam on his brakes.
This is a group with ATV's and other off-the-road bikes.
Hopefully they will get a handle on this before summer. It was clear this was an act of defiance.
New Critical Mass group
New Critical Mass group that takes lawlessness to ATVs and dirt bikes from bicycles? Not much difference in the end.
Can't get enuff...
..of that tune.
