Canal Street bouncer arrested on charges he stomped customer's head, beat and choked three other people

BouncerBoston Police report arresting a bouncer at the Grand Canal on Canal Street early Sunday.

Sidney Phillips, 31, of Avon, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon - a shod foot.

According to police, witnesses told officers that Phillips violently escorted a group of ten people outside around 1:30 a.m. after an argument inside the bar:

Several patrons reported they were physically assaulted by the bouncer. Four of the victims in the group stated they received injuries after being kicked, punched and choked by the bouncer, who attempted to remove them from the Grand Canal. The victims further explained that they were taking a photo in the bar when they accidently bumped an unknown female. At which time an argument ensued between the two groups. A male identified as a bouncer for the club approached the large group, in an attempt to remove them from the club. As the party of about ten males and females were removed outside, several reported they were physically assaulted by the same bouncer. Officers observed at least four victims in their twenties with visual injuries to their faces and heads. Two male victims and two female victims, all in their twenties, were transported to Mass General Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Phillips is scheduled for arraignment in Boston Municipal Court tomorrow, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Innocent, etc.

Fuck that guy stomping on people's heads. He definitely works at Grand Canal. My office used to be right across the street. Someone should report him to BPD and let them know he works as a bouncer there. Seen him before.

If someone will not report him, I'll call BPD on my lunch. That guy is a complete douchenozzle anyway.

Please keep us updated on this story! I frequent Grand Canal and have seen people get kicked out (violently) on numerous occasions. I've even spoken to security about how overly intense they always seem to be. The "stomper" needs to be fired or I will not feel safe patronizing this establishment.

Never been there any later than like 8pm. Never on a weekend. But the bartenders there during weekdays and weeknights, AWESOME people. Bouncers, not so much. Whatever, he got his comeuppance. Score one for the good guys. Plus, he can go back to Avon and suck it. Get out of Boston, Sidney.

BPD news release says the officers were shown the cellphone video. (EDIT: above story now mentions the arrest, nevermind!)

33% chance he gets 30 days in the house of corrections due to the violent nature of the attack.

33% chance he gets 60 days for the attack.

33% chance he gets probation/CWOF type of finding.

It also depends on how injured the person is.

Person(s). I've never been to prison/jail, so would those run concurrently, or back to back? There is a charge per person, right?

I saw this on my cellphone earlier, and didn't notice that last stomp.

He should get jail time for that last kick, since that could have killed another human being. I'd say 6 months if the victim is out of the hospital with minor injuries by today. If the victim is in the hospital longer than a few days with serious injuries/coma, the perp here should get more than 6 months, but no more than 2.5 years, and would probably get out in 6 months anyway with good behavior/probabtion, etc.

I didn't see him assault anyone else, and he probably will only get time for the three kicks.

Is this guy really tall? If so, I know him. I'm somewhat surprised.

Yes he is. Think you got the right one. I am surprised as well.

I don't want to hear all the whining when the Grand Canal goes before the Boston Licensing Board over this.

Probably friends with the owner/manager. How do you think bouncers and bartenders get jobs? It's all about knowing somebody.

Part of the problem is this idea of bouncers. "Bouncers" are just doormen, and have the same amount of power as a security guard. IE they can call the cops, and try to ask you something nicely.

Unfortunately too many establishment hire roided up meatheads who think it's their job to crack sculls and assault people. Also unfortunate that BPD usually just looks the other way, until they're forced not to because of the seriousness of the assault or a camera.

This could have all been prevented if the Canal gave all its new hires a copy of Road House. These bars need to invest more in employee training and enrichment.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports:

Assistant District Attorney Erica Brody requested that bail be set at $5,000 and that Phillips be ordered to stay away and have no contact with the victims. Judge Mark Summerville set bail at $1,500 – the amount that Phillips posted after his arrest. He will return to court on June 12.
