State Police shoot and kill black bear in Newton

Per Kate Merrill, tranquilizers this morning didn't work against the bear, in a tree on Eddy Street, overlooking the turnpike just west of the supermarket overpass. The westbound turnpike was briefly shut.

Kimball Megan reports her outbound Worcester Line train was briefly delayed around 7:45 a.m. because the bear was on the tracks.

Two photos by WBZ of the bear before it was shot.

This never goes nicely for the bears, they always end up dead.

Certainly more humane than the bear getting hit by a car on the pike. Falling 50 feet from a tree isn't exactly humane, either.

I'd like to know more about why they killed it and what the decision process was, but most bears in densely populated areas are successfully tranquilized and moved to different environs.

If the idea is that killing them will stop their migrations into suburban areas, the policy needs a serious rethink. MA needs to put out more information to even inner suburban areas and urban areas with wooded spaces as to how to not encourage these ursine forays - like, keep your garbage well stowed! Consider bear-proof dumpsters. Those kinds of things.

Mass cops always be hassling unarmed black bears and shooting them. When was the last time a white bear got shot for being in Newton or Brookline? Since when did a delay on the train become unacceptable, and worth killing a black bear? Just Sayin'.

So sorry - we were delayed at 7:45am! THIS morning

It was a little early for me (obviously stating the correct time of day was too much)

APOLOGIES!
